Should You Have Both?

Hi everyone. My husband and I are in the market for a new mixer. We currently have my MIL's stand mixer from the 70's (or something like that...it has wood grain Formica on it!) and it's finally giving up on us. We already know which stand mixer we want. But right now I can't justify spending $450 on a stand mixer. So I've been thinking about going out and buying a really nice hand mixer to use until we can afford the stand mixer. My husband doesn't really have an opinion. I am just wondering if, when I finally get the stand mixer, I will ever use the hand mixer again. I don't want to be wasteful. What do you guys think? Do you have both types of mixers and you use both of your tools? Or do you just tend to use one or the other? Do you think it's a good idea to have one of each for certain recipes?

Re: Should You Have Both?

  • i have a kitchen aid big mixer and a hand mixer.  I really only use my kitchen aid when im baking and baking alot- like Christmas time. Its big and heavy and i dont have the counter space for it. So it remains in a closet until i use it.  My hand mixer is easily accessible and i use it all the time for baking, mashed potatoes, etc.

  • Definitely have a use for both. Whipping up something quick or smaller is easier with the hand mixer. Also, if you make a cake or cupcake batter with one, you can do the frosting with the other.  I probably wouldn't buy a high end hand mixer if you're going to be saving for a new stand mixer is all.

  • my hand mixer was just from bed bath and beyond, simple and i always use the 20% coupons.

  • We have both, a KitchenAid mixer and an inexpensive handheld (I think it's Hamilton Beach). I find the handheld much more convenient, and only pull the stand mixer out for heavy duty mixing.

  • We have a band mixer only. I didn't even know we had one until my mom asked to use it. I could easily live with neither apparently. I just mix things up by hand.
  • Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I use both a lot.  If I'm just making frosting or 1 batch of something I use the hand mixer.  When I'm baking numerous batches of cookies or layered cakes or bread I use the Kitchen-Aid

  • Well guys right now Kitchen Aid has some pretty nice rebates on their stand mixers and after talking it over with my husband we decided to trade in a bunch of BB&B wedding gift cards for an Amazon.com gift card and make the investment! We ended up paying about $10 for my 7 quart stand mixer and then we'll be getting a $50 rebate through Kitchen Aid. It will be here on Tuesday!!! I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. But I can't decided what to make first...first world problems.
