Any Beagle/ Beagle cross owners?

Hi!

I have a beautiful beagle/boston cross who is 5 months old. We have just enrolled her in obedience school and I was wondering if anyone else had any tips/tricks that are beagle specific that might help make this a smooth process.

Its non aggressive, clicker based training, but I was told that beagles can be stubborn by nature (Minnie definitely is more beagle than boston).

Any suggestions would be welcome

And this is Minnie:

Re: Any Beagle/ Beagle cross owners?

  • i have no beagle specific advice but Minnie is super cute! We also took our pup to training. He is a breed that is known to be stubborn. I would say the biggest thing is to be firm with your voice and practice practice practice.

  • She is super cute!  I would say Boston's are more stubborn than Beagles but both are pretty stubborn.  I would say you just have to be more stubborn and stay with it!

  • Minnie is too cute!!

Our pup is not a beagle, but he can be very stubborn! Is Minnie food motivated? Boomer definitely is, so that was a big help. Any time he gets food he has to work for it and it reinforces his training. Keep treats on you all the time when you're first training so you can reward her and practice her training in different places. Also stay patient! It can be very frustrating when they're being stubborn but getting upset doesn't make it better.

Minnie is super cute, and ditto @bpphoto785. I have two beagles who have attended obedience school and food is your best friend. I would recommend getting small soft treats (e.g., might wolf) and break them in half or quarters so she doesn't get too full. You should also try to use one type of treat that is exclusive for training purposes as I found it was added insentive for my pups.

    Good Luck!
  • Your pup is adorable!!  We have a beagle/rott mix who is extremely stubborn and an alpha.  Food is a great motivator.  A kong is our best friend.  We fill it with wet dog food, and freeze it.  It's easy to handle and is a higher level reward for our girl.  She is super excitable so walking before class is a must for us.  And don't feel bad about asking about addressing specific behaviors.  Good trainers have all kinds of suggestions: treat transport, play time breaks when training, specific toys and many more.  Good luck!
