What to wear to cold weather weddings?

I am very excited to attend several weddings this upcoming fall and winter. Here is my question - what do you wear to a cold weather wedding? I'm thinking maybe a cocktail dress with stockings/tights and pumps?

Also, obviously you do not wear white ever, but are there any other colors that are off limits? Like, I've heard no to black at weddings but see people do it all the time. What about a bright red cocktail dress - too much or ok for an early winter wedding?

Re: What to wear to cold weather weddings?

  • Black is fine. Red depends on the dress. If it's too flashy, I'd say that's a no go.

I have a long black dress I got at JCPenney that I wore to my stepsisters wedding in Nov. last year....I dressed it up with a nice shawl thing instead of a sweater over it and then once the dancing started I was took it off and went sleeveless.  :)   I agree w/PP where you want your dress to be kind of muted, especially if you think you will be in any pictures with the bridal party.

    Edit: (A floor-length dress)
