Need advice on relocating cross-country

edited August 2013 in Money Matters
My fiancé and I just signed an 8 month lease for our last apartment in North Dallas. A lot has happened in the past year since we got engaged, and wedding plans have been postponed in order to prepare for our big move next May.

I work in retail management, he's in IT, and we can both transfer with ease. We plan on looking for apartments in Long Beach, Norwalk, Covina, La Puente, Duarte, Whittier, and Azusa so far. Right now the goal is to save up 6K+ for emergencies and get used to living modestly (with probably 2K in our wallets the day we move). I currently make 30K and FH is not far behind although we are both expecting a raise and/or promotion soon. I have insurance through my job and we've got a healthy cat and dog and don't plan on having children in the foreseeable future. One of the biggest stipulations would be buying a new car as we currently share one--and yes, I am aware it must be registered and pass the emissions test.

For my SoCal Nesties:
Do these numbers sound reasonable? I have family in Orange County, Hemet, and Norwalk, and they all seem to think so but I feel like they probably just want us out there ASAP. Just needing an outside opinion; your input is much appreciated!
