Barking constantly

We have two dogs and they are always barking at people. Whenever someone comes to the door or inside the house, they bark continuously. They even bark at people when they are just passing the house, even if they are across the street. Does anybody have any advice on how to get them to stop when we tell them to?

Re: Barking constantly

  • If you're talking/yelling at them when they're barking, you're reinforcing the behavior, because they're getting attention for what they're doing. You need to teach them a "quiet" or "hush" command after they've been quiet a couple of seconds. It's hard and it can take a lot of time.

You can help stop them from barking when people come to the door or into the house by removing them from the area. They're not allowed to greet the new person until they're sitting quietly. Try looking on YouTube for clips from "It's Me or the Dog." Victoria Stilwell is an amazing trainer when it comes to positive reinforcement training; you just have to be diligent and consistent at all times!

Also look at the "FAQ" thread to check out the link on NILIF training; I believe there's info in there about training a dog to stop barking.

  • I've forgotten what it is called but it's a barrier problem of some type -- your dog is fine at a dogpark or a dog phaydate or with other dogs playing or what have you but if he is on a leash or in a window or behind some other type of barrier, he's barky and loud.

    Try a behaviorist for animals.

Divert the dog's attention -- throw him a favorite toy or a very small dog buiscuit.

  • Dear i think you need to teach your pet some behavior, so that they shouldn't bark at anyone unnecessarily or you can better consult a dog trainer to help you out in this matter.
  • That is what I am trying to do, that is why I asked on here for advice. Thank you all for the suggestions!!
