Solid Color Chair -OR- Polka Dot Chair (pictures)

I'm in the process of furnishing my 1 bedroom apt. What furniture I have, including the tv stand and dining table, are espresso wood. I have a few white Ikea book shelves and the walls are also white. I have not purchased a coffee table, end tables or a rug yet. I have a red couch and need some help picking out an accent chair. Below are pictures of the couch I have and the 2 chairs I'm choosing between.

I have this red couch already.

I'm wondering if I should purchase this matching red chair/ottoman to complete the set -OR- if I should purchase this multi colored polka dot chair/ottoman to add color and more options.

Sorry if this is not enough information. But general advice on matching accent chairs and solid color vs patterns would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Hi, Steph

Never buy anything that is a matching set. You're living room will look like a furniture store, and that is not what you want your living room too look like.  For the accent chair you can def. add patterns, and preferably in a complementary color to your sofa maybe a pattern with a deep blue or deep green color would work.

The color of the multi colored polka dot chair/ottoman that you picked out will not work with your sofa in this case.  The colors do not compliment the sofa, and it will look very dull next to the red sofa.

  • I agree with PP that you should choose a pattern or a different fabric color for the chair (don't be matchy matchy with your sofa).

But, I don't think this polka-dot chair will stand the test of time like your red sofa will. I think this fabric pattern on the chair will look very dated after a few years. I like to opt for larger pieces of furniture that are more able to stand the test of time so I don't have to spend money every few years to update them.

I personally would choose a more neutral fabric for the chair in a suede, leather, micro suede, or a solid neutral fabric. Brown. Khaki. Sand. Grey. Beige. I would add a throw pillow to this chair that had some of the red from your sofa.

  • I vote to keep shopping.  You want pieces that will last and they will last by being versatile.  Seating is a big purchase and I would recommend a complimenting basic.  Enjoy your new apartment!
