This was weird and I do not think it was that couple's dog!
Long and sad...bear with me.
On Saturday a friend of mine and I were in a nearby smallish city for the afternoon.
I always take my camera; somewhere in the 4 pm hour we saw this dog that was tied to a drainpipe; the dog was in front of a store.
Plenty of people were going in and out of the store.
I stopped to take photos of the surroundings -- there were some interesting shots -- and my friend and I were busy talking.
Before we knew it a good 20 minutes passed and the dog was still where she was.
She was a pittie, very old and very grey.
She was also very warm. Her forehead was hot to the touch.
Nobody was coming out to get her.
We went into the store and asked for the store manager. We asked her if there ws anybody in her store who had a dog tied up outside; she said "I will ask. This is a dog freindly store."
We went next door to get the poor dog some water. She drank some of it.
By now people are stopping and looking at the door. One family with kids was there. "Daddy, do you think we can take the doggie home?"
I asked the people at the restaurant next door --- there was an outside eating area -- if the dog was theirs. They said no.
I dialed the number on the dog's tag --- and all I got was a fax machine. I dialed it twice: same result.
This was getting sadder by the moment.
Somebody in the crowd called the cops.
There was a gent going in and out of the doorway that led to an upstairs apartment area; I asked if he saw anything. He told me the dog was there for 2 hours.
It is ten to 5 at this point.
I said to my friend, "if nobody comes out by 5 pm, I'm taking this dog." Yes, I was going to --- I am pretty sure somebody abandoned the dog... and with that, this guy came out and came up to the dog.. I think he came out of the store. I am not sure; I didn't get a chance to see if he did or not.
He said the dog was his girlfriend's."Well, where is she?" "She's in the store."
I went into that store -- and I am sure all the patrons heard the conversation. It's not a large store and maybe 5 people were in there; even if somebody was in a dressing room, that person would have heard me ask about the dog tied up outside.
He claimed she had the dog "maybe 10. Or 12 years. I dunno..."
With that, she came out. "Ohhhh did you give my dog water?? thank you..."
I asked about the phone number on the tag and why come it was a fax machine's number. She said she didn't know.
With that, the cops finally came. He said a couple of words to her about the dog and then the couple left with the dog.
Something was weird there. I hope I did all I could. Maybe when I got the fax number I should have untied her -- Milly was her name -- and went home with her.
How very sad for that poor dog.
Re: This was weird and I do not think it was that couple's dog!
This is a very dog friendly town. At any given second on a Saturday, you will see at least 4 dogs pass by you --- and people bring their dogs to the restaurants; they sit at the outside area and keep their dogs nearby.
Funny how nobody saw anything, I don't know what was up with the couple but I think they were lying.
This is a very busy street and on any given Saturday, there are hundreds of people passing by that store and walking on that street.
Nobody will think twice about somebody tying up a dog...bet you that whoever this was slipped into the store, gave it 10 minutes and then came out and went on his merry way.
I do not think that dog was theirs. Something was weird here and the cop had a couple of words to say to her but not many. After that, she and her friend took the dog and left.
My friend said "yeah well if you took the dog you'd have gotten arrested...." Who's to say I would? There was also no dog license and that little tag with the name was well worn out. It was one of those cheesy ones that you make at a machine -- my dog's got one, too --- and you can see that that tag was there for a long time.
She also gave me some kind of rap about "oh well I just made up a new tag this morning...that one was falling off..." UGH.
