Shady vet office...what would you do?

Long story short: my dog was having petit mal seizures so I took her to my vet.  They did blood work, claimed it came back abnormal for liver functioning and told me they'd need to run a bunch of tests.  I said fine.  $400.  That was also fine with me.  The next day when the rest of her test results came back in, they said in order to diagnose her liver disease they would need to do ultrasound, xray, biopsy for $850.  This is where I started to feel suspicious.  I brought my dog to 2 different vets, along with the medical records and lab results from my other vet.  They each did their own blood work and reviewed the results from my old vet.  They both told me there was absolutely NO reason to suspect something was wrong with her liver, her results were completely normal and that the first vet was probably just trying to get our money.  Clearly I'm not going back to this vet anymore, but it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.  I've already left a few reviews online to warn others of this, but it's more than that.  I was petrified that my dog was dying when her lab results were actually normal.  I also paid $200 for additional lab work that was NOT needed.  Do you think I should try to dispute the charge on my credit card?  Anything else I could do here?  I'm just so angry right now.

Re: Shady vet office...what would you do?

  • Unfortunately, these things happen. I'm sorry your vet office appears to have been scamming you with necessary tests for your dog, but you did the right thing and got another opinion.

You can't dispute the charge to your credit card. You legitimately paid the vet's office. If you're going to dispute anything, I'd go back to them with results from whatever new office you got bloodwork from showing the normal results and asking them to reimburse you for unnecessary testing.

  • That's a good idea, @LuckyAngel07  Thanks.  I didn't think disputing the charge would work since I agreed to pay for it and the services were performed.  It is just so maddening!  Confronting them might be difficult, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

  • You can always report them to the BBB if you think that they were legitimately trying to scam you.

Sorry you had such a rough time of it!

  • The only things you can really do is leave bad reviews for them online (so as to keep others from using them) and file a complaint with the BBB.

I actually had a similar instance with a dentist, where I literally saw him changing charges to be more, and in that case he was committing insurance fraud.  It's very tough to make anything come of it because of the "proof" you need, but the least you can do is leave a negative trace online to warn others from using them.  They might contact you and try to make it right if you do so.
  • In addition to filing a complaint with the BBB, you may be able to pursue something with your state's attorney general.
