grandparents day?

when this this holiday start? i swear it wasn't around when i was a kid.  now i'm unsure if this is a day even the grandparents realize exists.  i'm debating on whether or not to do something for the grandparents....  something to the boys grandparents AND my and my husbands grandparents. ugh. i'm lazy...haha...

do you guys celebrate this?

Re: grandparents day?

  • We do not "celebrate".   It's totally made up and we already do gifts for them for Mother's/Father's Day.  That being said we do go to the zoo with my parents on that day every year.  Because my parents get in for free.   It's become a tradition, I think we've been going since my oldest was 2.  My parents look forward to it every year.  (But we don't buy or make them gifts or cards or anything like that!)
  • I do vaguely remember this being around as a kid, but not enough that I would know the date.  I think this is one of those made up holidays.  We don't celebrate - we acknowledge our parents as grandparents on Mother's/Father's Day, so I don't feel the need to add another holiday with everything else we having going on!
  • no, we don't celebrate that one either.  Like amber, we just include them in the mothers/fathers day recognition. I don't even know when this grandparents day occurs. And i would say that anything we didn't celebrate as a child with my grandparents is a made up holiday that is redundant and silly.
  • that's how i feel about it too. hope the grandparents aren't offended....
  • We don't celebrate it at all.

Here's my gripe with Grandparents day...If you are a grandparent that means you are a PARENT and therefore you already have a special day (mothers or fathers day).  You don't need 2 days.  Lets not be greedy.

  • I thought it was in October - then I saw a commercial about it this week and am totally confused. No, we don't celebrate - my parents, I'm pretty sure, don't realize it exists.

If I think about it when I'm out, they can pick out a card or make them a picture. But, I doubt I'll remember!

lol... maybe if grandparents day was the day we got to remind them about what it was like to be a parent and we could remind them how we don't need them to bring presents every time they visit I would be more open to participation. But that could end up being a very confrontational holiday. Perhaps it is best left the way it is.
  • I remember when we were in grade school we used to celebrate "Adopted Grandparents Day" - the class used to "adopt" a person at the local assisted living center and they were our grandparents for the year.   Aside from that and the fact that its always around my birthday, we never have celebrated it.

Now this year the school is doing something for grandparents day so the girls get to invite their grandparents to school which will be nice for them.

Are you talking about my mom?   ;)

Although, my nephew does live in NC so my parents only see him a few times a year. But my mom has "grandma's treasure box" that he is quite aware of when he visits. It is usually stocked with legos.
