Fall Flowers

I'm on a 'revamp our house kick', and now I'm thinking about the outside.  What flowers do you plant for fall? And when do you plant them?  I wanted to plant some mums, but wasn't sure when to do it.  Also, is there something else I can plant with the mums?

Mums are a perennial, so next spring and summer, they'll return with their green leaves and don't start blooming until the fall. Mums can also get very large, so give them some space if you are going to allow them to return next year. Pansies are good in cooler temps, but I forget if they are available in our zone in the fall (I usually see them in the spring). In front of my house, I have echinacea (which is about done), black eyed susans, a mum, coreopsis verticillatta, and lavender. All are perennials and will be in bloom until frost. The fall is when you plant bulbs for the spring (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths).
  • Thanks for the info!  I'm going to google some of the flowers you mentioned, to see what would look nice together.

  • There is a type of cabbage that is used for fall planting.  And pansies are good for the fall as well.
  • Better homes and Gardens has garden plans here that are super helpful :http://www.bhg.com/gardening/plans/ for any type of space you have. They list the type of plants for each zone and alternates and give you an actual layout to use so you know how far apart to plant them etc.

Like Erbur said, pansies are annuals so you have to plant them every year but they last FOREVER. You can plant them in March and they will last until Oct/Nov. Its usually harder to find them in the fall but if you can, you can plant them, they'll last a couple months. Ornamental grasses are also good for spring through fall...you can plant them now and get a couple months out of them before you have to cut them back for their return next year. Liriope is nice...small, compact, and its gets little purple stock flowers in the summer.
