I Need Help Brushing My Dog's Teeth

My Pom who is almost 7 years old has very bad breath and she also has some build up. I'm sure it's because I don't brush her teeth. She absolutely HATES having her teeth brushed. She bites at the tooth brush and shows her teeth. I know that it's time to get her teeth professionally cleaned because she has some build up (it's not horrible, but it's definitely time) but we really can't afford that right now. But I don't want to constantly aggravate her with it every day. Do you brush your dogs teeth? Do they hate it? How did you get them used to having their teeth brushed regularly?

I would initially start with using the toothpaste as a reward, letting them lick it off your finger, then once that is ok only reward them after they left you lift their lips, then you have to actually touch their teeth with your finger, then wipe all their teeth with your finger, then move to using the brush with the same basic steps. Each step may take several days until they are comfortable with it. Be slow dont rush and terrify them.
Also there are other things you can add to your routine to help control dental disease. Check out vohc.org (it's like the ads for animals) for great, research backed products.
As you seem to know none of this replaces the need for a dental cleaning done by a veterinarian but just like flossing and brushing our teeth, they can help!
