We've found a great weathered beam to use as our mantel in a cozy rustic family room. We've lightly sanded it to remove a bit of the roughness but are unsure how to finish it.
We tried staining an extra piece but it looked terrible. We'd like to keep it natural looking but would also like to seal it somehow to give it some protection. Does anyone have any suggesions?
Re: Reclaimed Wood Mantel
Coat of Polyurethane?
Or I used Minwax Polyshades on a project not too long ago if you want a little bit of color on it. It has stain and poly all in one.
I LOVE this idea. I'm actually wanting to do it in our family room once we refinish our fireplace area.
My grandparents used old 30 foot barn beams in the fireplace area of their lake home over 30 years ago. The beams are untreated and unvarnished. They have held up fine.
What are you wanting to protect your beam from?
