NBR: College Days

Hi all,
I'm back again with another question for you awesome ladies, inspired by the fact that this is the first day of fall classes for students at the community college I work at.

What are some of your favorite college memories? What events/services/people on your campus really made your experience memorable and successful?

Re: NBR: College Days

  • I'd rather not relieve most of mine!  It was very much not a good time for me.  My second time around was much better, but I went to school at night and already had a job, so it wasn't very exciting for me.

  • Im still taking classes. I did not have a chance to go to college full time- strait through. So now after 5 years I am taking a couple of classes at a time, still working on my degree. I was always working while in school too so I didnt have any crazy college days.

  • I played rugby in college, and most of my best college memories center around rugby.  Maybe I should leave it at that, without getting into the gory details.
  • I'm still taking classes also, so am no help with this question. Tried doing community college after high school and soon quit, so here I am many years later doing classes online.

  • There are definetly some days I miss being in college. Living 20 mins from my college town doesn't help much either lol. I met DH in college and spent three years hanging out with him at his fraternity and they are still some of our closests friends. Foam parties, Sex on the Beach parties with sand in their party room, just hanging out with a great group of guys in general, going out after parties to a mexican place that was BYOB and getting nominated on my campus to be part of a leadership program because my boss realized what a hard worker I was and how I good I was at what I did for them. It's always nice to be recognized when you least expect it.

I remember senior year I had a root canal and I went back to DH's room after because it was walking distance to the dentist and since DH was at class a couple of his brothers stopped by his room to check on me & see if I needed anything. Random but it also made me realize what kind of people he hung out with.

I also loved giving campus tours in the spring & fall. As a thank you gift, before graduation, admissions sent me a resume portfolio. I still use it when I go on interviews.

Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • I'm probably no help...

I LOVED COLLEGE! I had so much fun in college but that had more to do with my friends, college classes, campus, and school location than anything else.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • I worked full time in college and lived with my grandparents so it wasn't the most exciting time in my life. I spent more time studying and working and very little time having fun.

  • I'm also going to be no help.  It took 7 years, 3 colleges, 3 major switches, 2 jobs and one layoff for me to get through.  I commuted to school so I didn't have the traditional going away thing.

I could take or leave modt of my college memories. I did meet jeff there though so that is probably my favourite memory.
  • Wow! Sounds like you ladies had a range of experiences. It seems that most of you were very focused and worked hard, but didn't have the classic college experience for a variety of reasons. Thanks for sharing. Your responses are helpful, in that most of our students at the community college level also have these same challenges. Especially now the rising cost of living/tuition/cutting the number of classes offered, students are finding it more difficult then ever to complete their degree/transfer.

  • I loved pretty much everything about college, but especially dorm/apartment life.  Laying around on someone's bed watching Gilmore Girls and the OC were basically the best ever.  I LOVED living with huge groups of girls.  And I also really loved class and my English professors particularly.

  • @SapphireCounselor What do you do at your college?  I just started a job as a librarian at a community college myself.

I loved, and still love, Gilmore Girls. :) Best show ever. I also loved my English classes. Lol, in a forum like this I'm sure we have a disproportionate number of English/writing majors.

  • I don't even remember what exactly it was for, but at one point there were bumper boats in the school pool for an event. They were so, so fun.

There was also a local dairy that made the best ice cream. We'd do ice cream runs regularly and my freezer was always packed with pints of ice cream. I miss that!

Right now I am a program coordinator who works with the faculty in our Science department to coordinate field trips/mentor programs, speaker events, etc. But I am actually trained as a counselor/adviser and hope to land one of those positions eventually.

Awesome! How is the job so far?

Oh man.  The Donut Palace was my college treat place.  I had terrible insomnia and I'd go to The Donut Palace when it opened at 3:30 on nights I couldn't sleep.  Luke (MH) made one of his first moves on me by bringing me donuts from the Donut Palace.

  • I was a commuter, so I'm sure my experience was vastly different from most typical college students. I worked in the Music Dept's office, and the main desk in the Student Center for a large chunk of my time there, so I was always involved in some activity. My boss in the Student Center put me on the committee to plan events in the Center, so we came up with some fun events, and I got to goof off a lot on the job.

My best friend at school was an insomnia who loved Boone's Farm, so I had a lot of late nights with her and her roommates committing all sorts of silliness. We were also both electronic media majors, so we worked in the video booth for all the home basketball games, and spend lots of late hours in the editing booth in the tv studio finishing projects. I had a lot of fun in college, and kinda wish I could go back to those carefree days sometimes.

  • Dance team practices, sorority rush and house activities, karaoke Wednesdays and outside parties at our favorite bar. Weirdly, being at the library. Walking home from class on just warm enough and just cool enough days. Meeting new people and guys. I loved just about everything about college. No rush but I can't wait until my girls go. I will be so excited for them.

  • I loved college the first time around! (I just started again last week!)
Probably one of my favorite things was moving off campus my junior year, and meeting who is now my best friend! We had the best times. Another thing I always loved was something called Autumn Leaf Festival which went on each year in the town I went to college with.
I loved the overall atmosphere that went along with College and living in a College town.

  • Instead of college, I spent for years in the Marine Corps. After that, I used my G.I. Bill to pay for college and worked full-time.

  • I loved college so, so much. I lived on campus for the first four years (I was there 4.5 years due to student teaching), wasted way too much time pining away for one guy the entire time (but he and I are still friends), was the president of my sorority, and had a lot of fun. I went to a small, conservative Christian college (complete with single-sex dorms and a chapel requirement), and it was an experience that definitely shaped me.

The second time around, I did a BSN program at night and on the weekends, and it was MUCH LESS FUN. But it landed me in my career as a NICU nurse, so I can't regret it at all.

  • I had a tendency to be a little too serious about schoolwork and overload myself with responsibilities. I had a double major plus a minor, studied abroad twice, had 4 different teaching internships (two of which were basically half-time student teaching), and then student taught full-time my final semester. I was also on the dance team for awhile and held leadership offices in my sorority.

So my favorite memories are of times when I allowed myself to let loose and just have fun or do something completely out of my comfort zone.

For example...I ran the Naked Mile with my sorority sisters in England. (It's a school tradition!)

For a semester I was a photographer for student publications, and I got a free front row seat to pretty much any campus event.

With my sorority sisters, I also participated in a lot of Greek philanthropic events like lip-synching contests or dance contests.

I loved just spending time with my roommates too--watching romantic comedies and obsessing over boys we liked. :)

  • I went to community college and got an associate's in Liberal Arts (which is about useless to me) and then transferred to a 4 year university.  I ended up "taking a semester off" and never went back.  I plan on taking some classes online soon.
Nothing exciting really happened during that time period as I was working all the time that I wasn't in school.

  • I went to an urban college, and I have to say that it was one of my favorite things about my college.  I had some wonderful intership and work-study opportunities, especially at science-focused museums and some environmental organizations.

The downside is that I'll probably be paying for it until I retire...

I loved my undergrad experience.  I was completely immersed, and I just really loved it.  I was active in the music department activities, joined the professional organization (Delta Omicron), and I was very active in the theatre, too, and joined the honor society, Alpha Psi Omega.  I did plays, performed in ensembles, hung out in the music building break room (I practiced, too!).  I would hang out with the music folks at three guys' house where we would drink and watch DCI videos (I know), and the theatre department threw epic parties.  My freshman year the halloween party included two people dressed as silent film stars, complete with silver, black and white makeup, the whole nine yards.  They also didn't speak all night.

I didn't join a social sorority, but I had good friends in Chi Omega that I hung out with a lot.  I went to a few frat parties but they weren't really my scene.  I lived on campus all but my junior year.  I really enjoyed being close to everything and being able to walk everywhere I wanted to go.  My college only had about 5000 people.

My grad program was great, too, but I didn't much hang out with my cohorts.  It was a night program that catered to second career/working people, so that was a different experience all together, although I really enjoyed the people with whom I had classes.

Awesome! Advisor high five! My job is alright...a great place to start but certainly not a position I am going to sink 10 years into. I don't work as directly with students as I would like, but do enjoy coordinating our peer mentor program. I live advising.

I went to the local University so I never left home, but I still had a great college experience. I was really serious about academics so most of my memories revolve around late night study groups with my friends and hanging out on campus and in the library, peppered with occasional wild nights of partying.
