Have you painted your kitchen cabinets?

We have terrible builder grade oak.  I've hated them since we moved in but we didn't get to pick out the details of our home (long story short a couple bought/built it, before it was finished they split and neither wanted/could keep it themselves).  I'd like to paint them and have seen dozens of tutorials, but I'm curious how well they hold up after 6m, 1 year, 5 years, etc.

Re: Have you painted your kitchen cabinets?

  • I painted our builder grade cabinets a few years ago. They were a light wood color and I painted them white. We used gripper primer and it was awesome!!! I swear that stuff makes paint stick to anything!!! Then two coats of white paint. They still look great!!!
  • Thanks.   I'm not ready to tackle this project just yet, probably in a year or so (hoping).  We're going to price the cabinets I want and then set the money aside (that way if they turn out terrible we'll have the funds to replace).  We redid our kitchen at our previous home and I loved the cabinets, they were a honey maple color, I wish I could've brought them with us, they're no longer available (they were DIY HD or Lowes cabinets).
