Liver Failure

Gatsby went in for a suspected UTI and was kept over night to get a urine sample. I get a call this morning asking for verbal consent to do a blood draw. I say yes but ask why. Dr. says urine is showing liver failure. Asks about any plants we may have received as house house warming gifts. I say none and chemicals are kept on the top shelf of the closet so he couldn't have gotten anything there. I am going in later to discuss options and H is on a company retreat I am so hurt and lost right now. Gatsby is six months old. How did this happen?

Has anyone ever had to go through this and give me some advice or tell me what to expect? I am trying to stay off google search it usually only makes things worse.

Re: Liver Failure

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I truly hope your vet is able to help Gatsby recover.

Has he been eating normally? I don't know if hepatic lipidosis presents as liver failure, but if so that's a distinct possibility, and can develop within 1-2 days of a cat not eating (or eating very, very little).

What type of food do you feed him? I believe Blue Buffalo has had many complaints from people reporting it caused severe illnesses in their pets, though from a brief scan, most are dog related, and the only cat-related report I saw was for urinary issues and kidney injury.

  • Thank you for the quick response. He eats a lot of science diet food.

We got the blood work back and know the cause now. I am not sure the name but his gallbladder is releasing bile into his liver and making him ill. A few weeks on strong meds to hopefully stop it from happening. If we can't stop it we will have to have invasive surgery or put him down. He is young and we caught it early so the vet thinks no permenant damage has been caused but we wont know for sure until a few weeks.
