Let's talk about Miley Cyrus.  I have been seeing pieces of her "performance" from the MTV awards and I shake my head.  Then I saw the video for her song on MTV this morning.  DH and I got to talking and we both think that MTV knew what she was going to do.  Her video is just like her performance on the awards show.  On top of that, don't they rehearse before the show?!?! 

Anyways, what are your feelings?  Do you think that she is really on a downward spiral Lindsay Lohan style or is it just an act for publicity?

I think she did it on purpose...and I also think this is an example of a person who has never, ever, ever been told "No" in her life, so she doesn't think about consequences as much as you or I would.   She also looks like she could use a sandwich--Miley, you look hungry, girl!

Makes me glad I wasn't famous at 19!!

Overall, I thought her performance was disgusting and completely classless. Yes, other stars have done some pretty over the top things, but usually I can at least appreciate the art in their decisions. I see nothing positive in Miley's performance.

Although I thought it was disgusting, I do not agree with all the parent groups that are suing MTV and are calling on Billy Ray to "control his daughter".

Miley is now 20 years old. She is an adult and she can make her own decisions...including this awful one. Yes, at one point she was a the star of a Disney channel show for kids, but Miley is an adult now (so are a lot of the kids that used to watch her show) and  the MTV awards are not meant for a youthful audience. Parents should be aware that MTV is not for kids and the VMAs were never marketed as such...they were on after 9pm and, although I'm not sure of the exact rating, the show was not rated for youth audiences.

Miley makes her own decisions, and at 20 years old I don't think she needs her parent's approval for her actions. Perhaps her parents should step in and suggest that she portrays herself differently, but this is her lesson to learn from.

Yes, she gained a lot of attention for her performance but hopefully she learned that the attention came from a negative place. She could have given a more classy performance like Justin Timberlake did in the same show, and I'm sure we'd all be talking about how mature and graceful she's become.

Hopefully she learned a lesson from the whole train wreck.

I think I might be the only person on the planet that hasn't seen this performance.  I did kind of hear what she did though.  Sounds like an attention grabber.  It seems like stars that start out in their childhood all do something over the top at some point to lose the "innocent" image. 

Hopefully she'll learn and not become a total disaster like Lindsey Lohan.  I think people making that comparison should wake her up.  I know it would for me.

I only saw a quick clip of the performance.  From what I saw, she is trying to say, "Look at me, world!  I'm no longer Hannah Montana!"  Like Nic said, she is an adult and many of the people who watched her are older now.  I know a few of my students who were big into Hannah Montana are in high school now.  I am sure they are seeing a lot worse.

Also, it is MTV.  It's no longer the MTV that we had when we were teenagers.  It's made for a broad audience, going from teens to twenty-somethings.  They are hoping that people follow the ratings and don't have young children watching. 

For the parent advocate groups who are suing, it's a little ridiculous.  You can't sue because of something inappropriate on a cable network.  If it was appropriately rated then maybe people need to watch their kids a little closer.  I watch the show Mistresses on ABC.  There have been far more inappropriate scenes on that show than what Miley Cyrus did and ABC is a free, everyone has it channel.

As for calls to Billy Ray to parent his child, she is an adult.  He can sit her down and tell her that he understands that she is trying to get away from the Disney image, but there are more appropriate ways to do that.  She also does not need to listen.  I am sure she has a publicity team who encouraged that anyway.  Look at how much it is being talked about!

I personally don't care what she does. It was a TV show, done for publicity and ratings.
