NBR: 50 years ago today

Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that 50 years ago today Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about his dream of equality from the steps of the Washington monument. What have you learned abut the civil rights movement from all the anniversary stories/programming that you didn't know before?

  • Since we are a book club after all, I will recommend The Children by David Halberstam, in case anyone is in the market for a really great book about the civil rights movement.  I took a mini-seminar in law school that centered around this book, and it was fabulous.  Halberstam is a great writer, and the topic is fascinating, IMO.

I haven't been keeping up with all of the news stories this year, unfortunately.

    Awesome recommendation! Thanks for that!

I'm going to check this out, thanks.
  • Also, while I haven't learned anything new this year, I think that what caught my attention so much when I was studying the topic really was the fact that so many of the key individuals involved in the movement were so young.  Halberstam's book was called the CHILDREN for a reason.
