The "Get Inspired" SuBC task also includes the option to "do something inspiring based on the book and post about what you did."

I picked up a free (at the time) Kindle book called Chop, Chop that includes a character who continuously grows out her hair and then donates it over and over again.  I really wanted to read it, because four years ago, I cut my hair short and donated it, and since then I've been growing it out in order to donate as much as I can.  I decided that it was time to cut it!  While I wasn't thrilled with the book, I am very happy with my new haircut!

Hopefully the 21 inches I'm donating to Wigs for Kids will make someone else very happy too!

  • I love the haircut! You look fabulous!  I cut my hair and donated last year, but I wasn't brave enough to go too short.  I think it's a wonderful cause to support.

  • Okay, for a "before" picture, this was at my sister's wedding last December, so it was a little bit longer when I cut it (just touching my waistband in the back), but you get the idea.

@aggiebug, I thought it was a pleasant read, but not a great book.  If that makes sense.  I enjoyed reading it, but I didn't think it was very good!

The quick pace kept me interested, and I found the last third of the book to be charmingly touching.

The biggest turn-off was the grammar.  In the beginning, he says he did something "good" and an adult corrects him, but there are more cases in the dialog later where they use "good" instead of "well."  It irked me, but I wrote it off to trying to make the dialog realistically childish.  However, then I ran into a few cases of "could of" or "would of" done something.  Even a kid slurring it into "woulda done it" is actually saying "would've."  "Would of" is simply a misspelling.  It's like writing that an educated character said "Its over their."  That's just weird, and it would require consistent misspelling in the rest of the dialog.  I think it was just an egregious mistake.

The other thing that bothered me was that the plot didn't seem very well thought out.  It claims in the beginning that the story isn't about the girl, but most of the middle section is otherwise completely meaningless.  The boys' friendship is developed quickly, and the rest of the anecdotes that make up most of the middle of the book don't really develop it much more.  Ripping a lot of that out really wouldn't have too much impact on the main plotline.  It was pleasant to read, but felt more like a fictional memoir with a collection of interesting but disconnected events.
