The only genre I shy away from is contemporary women's lit/chick lit, unless it's a romance.  I tend to hate the women in them.  One I read that I did really like though - The Little Lady Agency
That reminded me. I steer clear from this genre, too, but I really like Sarah Addison Allen's books.

Good one. I felt like the only person who hated Friday Night Knitting Club.

Same here with high fantasy.  I like fantasy if it's YA, but never thought I would like a book like The Name of the Wind.  Well, I was wrong.

I guess I will have to try this one.  I don't mind fantasy as long as it isn't too heavy and there is a little romance involved.  Might have to pick this one up next.

@84Lauren - You wouldn't ever want to read my book then.  :((

Maybe I'll throw in a few Outlander type references just to tempt you.

    1. You know I will love anything you wrote because you are you and you are hilarious.  WHEN your book comes out I will have one more "exception" to the genre to add to my list. :)

    2. Outlander references would still be appreciated.

  • For the longest time I only read suspense/thriller/mysteries, whatever you call its, but I read a Nora Roberts book and loved it. I was not into romance at all and thought it would be lame women who are all light-headed over men who and everyone is ridiculously shallow or just not very well-rounded. But NR proved me wrong.

  • I actually love fantasy books and it's my go-to genre, though I'll pretty much read any sort of fiction book.  I don't really read a lot of non-fiction but I loved Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.

I also found Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach very interesting.  I read it a couple of years ago...I think it was recommended on this board while I was still in lurkdom.  I keep meaning to pick up her other books.
