Week in Caribbean from Orlando? Puerto Rico maybe?

I am going to a wedding at WDW in January.  After a few days in the parks, we'd like to head further south.

There are reasonable, direct flights to Puerto Rico from MCO....  Any thoughts on PR?  Maybe somewhere else?

I've just started planning....   We like nice hotels with great pools, gorgeous beaches.  Budget for hotel is probably in the $200 a night range.

TIA for helping me get started.

  • Puerto Rico is great because you don't need a passport to go. We've always enjoyed the Marriott or Caribe Hilton. Bahamas is also a really quick flight, but you do need a passport to go.

  • We have passports!  (couldn't live without 'em.  ;)   Actually we're Canadian and need them to get into the US, too....

Thanks for the hotel suggestions!   Will check both of them out.

  • Puerto Rico is nice if you have never been.  I have family there, so no recs on hotels.. but check out the board on cruisecritic, as a lot of cruises leave from San Juan and people stay there before or after.  Have fun!

  • Caribe Hilton is nice but large chainy type of hotel. But nice. I also love the water beach club. Op have you considered a cruise too?

  • Puerto Rico is nice! The people are very nice, the weather is great, the food is awesome. When my husband and I went, we rented a condo from homeaway.com instead of getting a hotel, which was great because we cooked a few times, had a lot of space and had a washer/ dryer.

Keep in mind that San Juan (especially Condado) is expensive!! Also, it is very difficult to get to different areas of the island unless you rent a car.

If you do go, make sure to check out Luqillo beach and El Yunque rainforest! Have a blast.
