my dog attached a dog

I'm a mess this morning.  On our morning walk a small dog ran out to the road where I was walking my dog on a leash.  At first my dog just sniffed the loose dog and then the other dog (~5 lbs) was in my dogs mouth (45 lbs).  I got the dog out and then she got ahold of them again.  The little dog is at the vet but I don't know what is going to happen.  I don't know if legally I am responsible.  I don't know if I will ever be able to trust my dog again to walk without a muzzle.  I don't know where to go from here.

Re: my dog attached a dog

  • I'm very sorry you're dealing with this. Chances are though, you're not responsible and your dog isn't to blame. There are leash laws for a reason, and your dog was leashed. It's possible your dog is leash reactive to some extent and this is the first time you're finding out. I really don't have any advice for you; I'm just sorry the situation occurred.

  • I agree with Lucky, your dog was leashed and the other dog wasn't.  I'm sorry that it happened, and hopefully the other pup is ok.  Some dogs see little tiny dogs almost as a toy, but I'm not sure how the scenario played out and if she was acting agressively or not.  I don't trust one of my dogs with tiny ones - she just doesn't realize her size, plus she has a really high pray drive and I'm afraid she might think it was ok to chase/pounce/bite.  Off-leash dogs make me nervous no matter what the size is - you just never know what could happen (hence the leash laws).  I would say it is up to you whether you want to help pay for any portion of the vet bills, but I don't think there is any way you'd be liable.
