I think that one of the things that connected me to this book automatically was the fact that every time my mom and I talk on the phone or see each other, one of the first things we talk about is what we're each reading. We pass books back and forth and discuss them later- nothing formal of course, but a decade long passing of books.

She easily reads as much as me, maybe more, and I cannot remember a time growing up that she didn't have a book going. When I was younger, she read out loud to me before bed wayyyyy after most of my friend's parents had quit, but we both loved it. I would love it if she could still read to me before bed ;)

Do you discuss books a lot with one of your parents? Do you feel like that affected your view of this book?

Re: EoYLBC: Your parents' reading habits?

  • My mom LOVES to read but she works so much that she never finds the time. The books she has read, we can sit down and speak for hours. She wanted to join my IRL bc too. Haha.

  • My mom likes to read but it takes her awhile to finish a book. We have completely different tastes in books.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • My Mom reads a lot. My Grandma reads a lot, but slower. My aunt, cousin and MIL are all big readers too. We're constantly passing books back and forth (with sticky notes in the cover with everyone's name, crossed off after they've gotten it). When I see any of them, it's always a mini book club.
  • My mom doesn't read often, but my dad does. He doesn't have time in the summer, but then he reads voraciously in the winter. All summer, I put books in a pile for him to read (Joyland is at the top of the pile from this summer!), and then we discuss them as he reads them. We read ASoIaF at the same time, so he would call and try to ask if I'd gotten to certain parts without spoiling anything. It was so great to have someone to talk about those with!

  • My mom is a big reader and I love talking books with her. I just wish she lived in the same state so we could do it more.

  • My mom is a big reader, though we have different taste in books - she reads a lot more non-fiction and I prefer fiction.  But she always has at least one book going and has been that way for as long as I can remember.  She always encouraged my love of reading.  We do talk books sometimes and recommend them to each other (particularly if she reads a fiction book that she really enjoyed or I read a non-fiction book that I really enjoyed).

My dad never read much, but in the past 5 years or so, he's started listening to audiobooks as he has a very long commute, so we do occasionally talk books too.

  • My mom reads a ton but she reads a lot of mystery books and I don't really read those.  She often takes suggestions from me and borrows my books but we don't usually discuss them after she's read them unless we see each other right afterwards.  She doesn't suggest books to me but she always encouraged my love of reading growing up.  She loves that we have it in common.  I don't really know why we don't talk about the books we have both read more...maybe we will now!

  • Both of my parents are big readers. My dad used to take me to the bookstore once a week, growing up, and we would spend hours looking at books and each pick one to buy. My mom and I discuss books all the time. We share books, trade books, etc. Reading is her hobby as well. I grew up in a home where we rarely watching television (less than an hour a week total and it was only allowed on during the weekend). My brothers would run around outside. I would read and usually my mom was right next to me with her book, whether inside or outside.
  • My mom was a big reader when I was growing up. She still reads a fair amount now, but she had a brain injury about a year ago and finds it really hard to retain any new information. We talk every week about what we are both reading and I think it helps her with her comprehension. We also send each other emails throughout the week. She tells me it helps her to put her thoughts together better when she writes them out. We used to read a lot of the same books, we don't do that too much anymore.

  • I am the only reader in my family. Like, to the point of getting (playfully) picked on about it. Everyone either falls asleep when they read, or just don't see the point in doing something that "takes up so much time but isn't really good for anything." I just don't get it.  [-(

The only thing I know of my mom reading is the 50SoG series, and that's not something I ever plan on picking up.

  • My mom hates to read and my dad all I ever saw him read was the bible. (he died 6.5 years ago) I'm adopted so maybe I get it from somewhere else? lol

  • My mom does not read and never encouraged us to read...it is very sad :-( I think if she did read it would def bring us together and give us something to talk about. Could be a reason why I did not connect with this book!

  • My mom used to read a lot more when I was younger, but she doesn't read as much anymore. She's a pretty busy lady, so it will take her like a month or more to read one book.
We have pretty similar tastes in books, so I try to recommend ones I know she'll like, but then she never tells me what she thought of them. haha!

  • My mom is not a reader.  Neither are my brother and sister.  My dad reads every night though and I'm sure that rubbed off on me.

  • My mom and grandmother both love to read, but we have fairly different tastes.

This is my mom exactly. She reads much slower and works a lot, so I think she only reads before bed.

My grandma is what really got me into reading though. We would read at the same speeds, and she always chose things that interested me also. She had a spare bedroom dedicated to her book collection. When she ran out of bookshelf space, she started putting them in dresser drawers. Any drawer, trunk, or closet you opened had a stash of books in it. I loved it :)

My parents and sister are big readers, but I am the biggest reader. My parents mostly do audio books these days and they will listen to a lot of the books I enjoy (I usually share my books with them). My sister and I have similar tastes but with her 7 month old she does not have the time I do to read these days. When I was on deployment she and I would read a book together - read a set number of chapters then talk about it the next day or when we could. I really enjoyed that. We send each other books - she sent me the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan.
Edited to add this: My dad read books to my siblings and I when we were kids, not kid books but fantasy and sci fi books and when I got older I wanted to reread them and thats what really got me into reading. I loved the stories when I was little and rereading them was fantastic!

  • I miss my mom dreadfully! (She died in 2002 of cancer) She always had at least two books going. I wish I had talked with her more about them when she was here, but I was "too young" and, of course, I was reading a lot of SK which she wasn't into.

I talk to Dad sometimes, but he if he reads he reads political books which isn't my style.

I would love to know what Mom would be reading right now. If she would have gotten into some of the YA books or who her favorite authors would be.

Hug your moms while you can!

  • My mom is just getting back into reading.  She has never been the type to slow down and do stuff for herself.  Growing up she would get home around 5, make dinner, do house stuff, etc. without watching tv or reading anything.  Now she gets book requests from my Dad and I and has been enjoying them.  It has been great chatting with her about them :).  My Dad as I grew up always had the paper or magazine that he was reading.  I don't remember many books but now he is becoming more avid in reading books and even some I have on my Kindle or have suggested.  He is two books into the Outlander series which I didn't know about until I was helping him categorize some of the books.

  • My mom always read but never as much as I do.  I got her a kindle a couple of years ago for her birthday (that my stepfather "accidentally" broke when he sat on it) because she wanted to start reading more regularly again.

We do like some of the same books but she's not as voracious as I am.
