EoYLBC: Finding time to read

This isn't totally discussion worthy, but this was maybe my favorite part of the whole book.

Will is asking his mom how she had time to read when she had all these kids and she was working and going non-stop.

She replied that she just got used to being tired and then she said:

"If I had waited until I was well rested to read, I never would have read anything."

I love that. People constantly ask me (and I'm sure every person with a job or kids or pets or TV) how I have time to read so much and I always just kind of scratch my head. I have time because it's important and I make time. It's often more important to me than being rested or taking part in other hobbies, so I just do it. I think I got little goosebumps when I read that. It's just kind of perfect.

  • I agree completely.  I find time to read because I'd rather read for a half hour before I go to sleep than get that extra half hour OF sleep.  Granted, in the morning, I'm usually regretting that decision lol!  But anyway, most of the time I'd rather read than watch TV or do a lot of other things.. it's just a matter of priorities.

Yeah, I usually feel proud when people ask me where I find the time to read.  I think it's important, I enjoy it, so I make time for it.  I like that other people know that about me.  I'd much rather be known as the book nerd than the person who's up on all the latest Hollywood gossip or whatever.

  • I agree. I make time for it. It's important to me. Some people have running or working out or other hobbies as their outlet - I have reading. I don't let a day go by without making some time for reading.
  • It's definitely hard for me to make time to read some days because I do have tons of other hobbies that I try and make time for as well. That being said I just feel so much better (and smarter!) when I find time to read on a consistent basis. Thanks to this board I've been doing that much more over the last couple of months. Even my husband has been laughing at how I always have a book on hand now and even if I get only a 5 min break I'll always pull it out!
  • I loved this quote, too. It is exactly how I feel!

  • It's just a matter of what people consider important.  For me, reading is about as necessary as breathing.  I have friends who are proud of the fact that they don't read and I always feel desperately sorry for them.  They'll never experience the wonder of the Wizarding World.  They'll never understand that breathless excitement which is Outlander.  They won't remember what that first tumble into love was.  They won't know what it is to know that psychic bond between a dragon and his/her rider click in for the very first time.

It's honestly their loss.  I've read all of those things.  They're mine now.

  • I loved this quote and the quote about reading as "passing time" and how she considers it a noble and worthwhile use of time, not just something to while away hours.  I loved the way she validated reading as expanding your mind, learning compassion for others, etc and not just a time waster.  I so often feel like people say "how do you have time for reading" as a criticism - like I'm laying around eating bonbons while they slave away at "real" work.

  • I wasn't a huge fan of the book in general, but I did love this part. I read about 100 books a year. Give or take. (last year it was like 75. This year I'm on the way to surpassing 100. It just depends). I'm always amazed when I see those of you that set goals of like 200. And I always think then, I wish I could find the time. For me it is often difficult to find time, because I also love  riding my horses, spending time with friends and family, etc. But because it is important to me, I make time. Often when people ask me how to find time, I want to ask them how they find time to ride bikes, knit, sew, whatever else it is that they do.
