Has anyone thrown a murder mystery party?

DD would like one for her birthday.  I know there are kits on the internet that help with party planning, but I am wondering if anyone has thrown a party like this before and what I can do to keep it interesting.

Re: Has anyone thrown a murder mystery party?

  • My friend bought the kit online and it was amazing!  Make sure your friends are the type to have fun.  We all dressed the part - I can't remember the era but I wore a party dress and fur around my neck and it was way fun.  Make sure to have food and drinks!

  • How does it work exactly?  I've always wanted to do it and we're having a speakeasy themed party later in the year and I'm thinking of doing a murder mystery kit.  Do you have to tell people who they are ahead of time?

If you buy the kit, it will provide hosting instructions.

Give people the general theme ahead of time, so they can dress up.  If you want people to really get into character, you can give them their specific character profile ahead of time too, but it's not necessary.

When we played, ours was about a rich Italian family - so we dressed up, and played after we ate a lasagna dinner.  I think we were given our specific character information ahead of time, but not even the murder knows that he/she is the murder into about half way through the game (and then, only he/she knows, until the final reveal - that might vary depending on the kit).  My brother in law brought water guns, hidden in his suit jacket just in case, and it turned out that he really was the murder....it made for a very fun/wet conclusion to the game.  They're a lot of fun!
  • We did the passion and pistols or something like that. I think it was the same as PP was talking about with the Italian Family. It was such a blast. We were laughing so hard by the end.

I just order Murder at Mardi Gras and A Taste for Wine and Murder. They are made by Bepuzzled and I got them on Amazon. I am planning on having another in a few weeks. I have ordered the Hurricane drink mix from Pat O'brian's in New Orleans. Everything will be gold, green, and purple!
  • We did it for my sister's birthday last year and it was so much fun! Can't recommend it enough :)
