New puppy refuses to do it's business outside!
I just got a yorkie terrier about 2 weeks ago and she completely refuses to used the restroom outside or even the pee pads. Now I know it takes time to potty train and a few weeks is not enough but she won't even do it once a day. My husband works evenings mostly so he's with her in the morning-afternoon and I have her in the evenings so there is always someone with her taking her outside and trying to teach her. I have been outside with her twice today, once for an hour and then again for 40 mins and she doesn't do anything so I take her inside and she immediately goes. I then get her while she's doing it and take her outside and she doesn't finish, I wait 20 mins and bring her in and she does it again! She's been doing this since we got her, she waits until she is inside to pee or poop and she has only peed outside 3 times and has never pooped outside. It's so frustrating because we take her about 15 mins after eating or drinking so I know she has to go she just holds it. I don't know if I'm expecting too much from her, we had a pit bull before her (RIP Krypto) and he only took a week to train and rarely had an accident for the whole 8 years we had him. Do you guys think it's her breed, are Yorkies harder to train? Is it her age? She's 2 and a half months. Please give me some tips, I have no idea how to make her stop going inside.
Re: New puppy refuses to do it's business outside!
Take her outside very frequently, like every 30-60 minutes. Take her our on a leash so she can't get distracted. Walk her around until she potties (a potty command can help - I use "go pee") and when she does, give her TONS of praise and rewards.
If you take her out but she doesn't potty, you can crate her (if you're crate resuming, which I would recommend for housebreaking purposes) or tether her to you so you can closely supervise her and watch for any potty signs (sniffing, circling, etc.) and take her out again 30 minutes later. Repeat as needed. If you catch her having an accident in the house, interrupt her (clap, shake a jar of pennies) and immediately take her outside to finish.
Also, make sure you are cleaning up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle - it completely eliminates the pee/poo so the dog can't smell it anymore. If they can smell it, they may think it's ok to potty in that spot again.
Finally, get rid of the pee pads - they will just confuse her and make her think it's ok to potty inside.
