Beige Beige Beige!

Hello,

I normally post on the bump, but I need some help! My husband and I are not very design savvy, although we like a mix of modern & traditional. When we bought our house 5 years ago we painted our living & dining room beige, bought a beige couch with brown leather accents, installed beige carpet, brown curtains, a brown chair with some red accents, and have dark wood table & TV stand. It's so bland and beige and we are really looking for a change.

We want to paint the living & dining room (they are connected, so they have to be the same color), but we're not sure what color to choose that would complement all of the beige we have going on! Any ideas? I think a light grey-ish blue might work, but I can't find a good inspiration picture.

Re: Beige Beige Beige!

  • The bathroom in my house when we bought it was almost completely brown.  The tiles on the floor are a dark brown, the fixtures are oil-rubbed bronze, the wall tiles are light brown and the paint on the walls is also light brown.  I have plans to add a light turquoise to the room to brighten it up. I think that adding in this color will help bring in some life - you could get away with a light blue or even a blue on the more turquoise side.

Red would also be another nice color that you could use, but I would stay more towards the brown and darker reds instead of primary red.  Red is a terrible color to paint on walls though, as it usually takes two or more coats unless you're buying an expensive tinted primer from the start.  I would stay with the blue colors - they will really lighten up the space, and they are easy to paint over in the future too if you get sick of the color palette.
  • Our house we painted everything beige too.  Our walls in the living room still are, we haven't changed that yet.  Couches are dark brown.  I went and bought blue pillows and a ton of cool blue accents to put on the shelves.  Have some random pictures on the walls.White shelves, White trim and iron accents around as well.  Seriously, just grab some color, put a light color you like on the walls and that will brighten it up.  Add colorful accents.  It will liven up the place..  And just do  a little at a time...  You will figure out what you like as you go...  :) Good luck.  Its fun redecorating your house.

  • In my old house, we used Olympic paint color Frosted Gray (it is blue/gray) - loved it.  I'm now trying to incorporate it in my new home as well.  If everything is beige/brown, you can pretty much choose any color you want and it would look good.  Good luck!
