Tell me about Berlin

My boyfriend is headed over for work in late October, and I'm planning to join him for the weekend before.

I haven't even begun to look into this, so tell me... What to see? Where to eat? What to do?

  • Everything? I love that city!

  • (First order of business is to figure out which area to stay in, so I can book a hotel.)

We stayed at the NH Friedrichstrasse and really liked it.  It was near restaurants, a central train station, easy walking to the big sites (like the arch) and museum island.  Another nice area to stay in is the Postdamer Strasse area.  There are some very trendy shops, hotels, and resturants nearby.

We did a 4 hour walking tour that focused on WWII and other relevant recent German history.  It was really interesting.  We did a hop-on-hop off bus tour to see the rest of the city.  We got off for the big part of the berlin wall on the one side of the city and the jewish museum.  The zoo is supposed to be really great. The Pergamom museum is world famous.  I regret that we missed it. The Topography of Terror museum (free) was really interesting/informative and the Checkpoint Charlie museum had a lot of information about life after WWII but during the cold war.  There seemed to be a ton of museums all around and interesting architecture.  Two days was not enough!

I found out on this trip that the German food I have eaten before in that country and that I have eaten here is basically Bavarian and that the Berlin cuisine is closely related to Polish or Russian cuisine.  The only restaurant that stands out that we ate at was Lutter & Wegner next to the beautiful Gendarmenmarkt Square.  Berlin is pretty cosmopolitan when it comes to food.  You'll find lots of different cuisines.

I hope you enjoy the city.  It was pleasantly surprised and hope to get back again soon.
