Help! Horrible Fridge!

My landlord just brought us our "new" fridge last night, (the last one wouldn't hold the correct temperature) and it REEKS. The delivery guy said he'd cleaned it with bleach, but that it still had a smell.

He wasn't kidding. I gag whenever I walk into the kitchen. I sprayed the thing down with a bleach cleaner trying to kill whatever is causing the smell, and stuck a box of baking soda in there and it still is horrible.

It smells kind of like dirty water, only with the power of death. I watched them bring it in yesterday so I don't think anything is caught behind it, but I don't know what to do. It "works" but is completely unusable.

Anyone know where I could look to clean it, or if a particular part could cause the smell?

Thanks

Re: Help! Horrible Fridge!

  • Have you taken apart the drawers, shelves, any trays the are moveable?

I'd also see if someone can help you tilt it backwards a bit to check underneath it.

I've found that mixing baking soda and water into a paste and letting is sit on the surface helps to pull out smells out of plastic, then rinse/wipe clean and let air dry.  Not sure if it would help for everything, but possibly for the inside.
  • I moved into a new (to me) home and took all the shelves and drawers out of the fridge and washed with Dawn dish soap. The interior I used a kitchen cleaner on. Between Dawn, baking soda, and vinegar you should be able to find some sort of resolution. If not, it has to be dead mice or something in the back! Good luck!
