Re: QOTD 9/11

  • A senior in high school. My first period was government (central time zone). We arrived in class and people had started talking about how a plane hit the wtc so our teacher brought in a tv and turned in the news. We started watching just before the second plane hit. our teacher immediately predicted that the al qaeda were behind this. The rest of the day was a blur with us watching the TV in every class and a sense that this was so wrong. Teachers and students crying.

    I can't believe it's been 12 years.

Me too. My senior botany class watched the second plane hit. One of my classmate's brothers was in Tower Two.  All I can think of is watching him crumple at his desk. Lots of friends had family in New York (I grew up just outside Philly) - we were dismissed around 11:00 so people could try to get in touch with loved ones in the city. It amazes me that so much time has passed, because that memory is so sharp.

  • Junior in HS.  We didn't hear about it until 3/4 period in Math class (1030 Eastern Time).  Just that a plane crashed into a building in NYC.  Then in chorus last period our teacher had a big screen computer in the classroom (rare in my school, along with TVs) and we saw what was going on via the internet... it was so scary.

We still have field hockey practice after school.  It was SO eery without hear the plane traffic... I never noticed it before.  I lived 45 mins SW of Philly so we were really in the middle of many airports etc, including dover AFB.

I didn't see videos until I went home.

  • I was a 15 year old sophomore taking a standardized state test we call ISTEP in Indiana.  Went to art class afterwards and saw the 2nd plane hit live--we thought it was a replay of the first, then realized both towers were hit.  Scary stuff.  I was kind of a mess that whole year, and I think 9/11 contributed to that.

How horrible. I don't think anyone that I knew or at our school knew anyone at the towers or in NYC (grew up in IA), but I couldn't imagine his pain or what to do to comfort him. So sad.

  • I was in 9th grade.  I had stayed home that day with a migraine.  My mom woke me up after the second plane hit.  I laid in the dark and watched it for the rest of the day.
  • I walked into drivers ed and peter (who looked like an elf...have no idea who he is now...) told everyone that a plane hit the first tower, we turned on the tv in the room and saw the second plane hit. we thought it was a replay until we realized that was live. This was second period (central time). 3rd was AP US history, Mr. O'Brien didn't say a word and we just watched the news. By 5th Period, AP physics, our teacher had us do work b/c we all were so drained from all the footage. The rest is kind of a blur.

  • I was in my government class, senior year of high school. Another teacher came to the classroom door and whispered something to my teacher. He RAN to turn the TV on and we saw the second plane hit. Most of the rest of the day was a blur. The only other things I remember were how weird it was to not hear any planes in the sky when I went outside, and trying to call my aunt in Manhattan but the phones were down. (She was okay, FYI.)

  • I was a freshman in college. I had an intro to music class.  There was this guy who would always be there early and sit in the back left corner of the class.  He came in late, after the sign in sheet was going around.  He walked over to me, took the sheet from me, signed in and walked out.  The professor asked him what he was doing and he told her that a plane just flew into the Twin Towers, his father was freaking out and he had to go.  She taught for like 20 more minutes, then dismissed us "Just in case something serious really did happen."  She apologized for that comment the next class.

I walked through the student union back to my dorm.  They had TVs on with live coverage.  I remembered my uncle worked in the World Trade Center.  I rushed back to my room and called my grandmother.  She was so shaken, she didn't know who I was.  My uncle was ok but had to walk home from the WTC because there were no trains.  We live about 30 minutes from Ground Zero by car.

Classes were cancelled for the rest of the day and the next day.  I was freaking out because I couldn't call my parents.  When I would call I would get a message that said something like "Due to the emergency situation in this calling area, lines are overwhelmed.  Try again another time"  I would get through every like 5 times that I tried.
  • Freshman year of highschool. Our first class started at 8, so they had the TVs on in our homeroom. Then my 2nd period was study hall, so again the TVs were on. I remember that they told us not to mention anything to the middle school or elementary school kids, as they were all going to be told at lunch. My dad worked on the base, and as it happens to be an ammunitions depot, they were on lockdown for 2 days. I'm not American, but I was living in the States at the time and it was truly the most humbling and horrific moment of my life.

  • I was a senior in college and getting ready for my first class. I didn't have a tv in my room but the radio announcer started talking about how a plane has hit the World Trade Center. I thought it was a joke but woke up my room mate so she could turn the tv in her room. We both sat there completely stunned. Classes were canceled and anyone on campus could go to the lecture hall and watch cover on the big screens. Being not even an hour and a half from NYC it really hit home for us. I remember being frantic trying to get in touch with family and friends down in the city. I remember crying A LOT that day and even now as I type this it still feels so fresh and i get very teary eyed.
  • Sophomore in college. I was sitting in the common room waiting for my roommate so we could go to class and I happened to have the TV on. On the way to class I saw another roommate and gave her the news and she freaked bc she is from Brooklyn and her family works in the city. It took her awhile to get a hold of her bf at the time bc the cell service was over run. Thankfully everyone was ok. Once we got to class we were dismissed early and we all went back to ou room to watch the news all day.

  • I was in 8th grade. I started hearing little things about it between 2nd and 3rd period. My 3rd period was U.S. History. My teacher turned on the TV and we watched the coverage. We walked in right as the 2nd tower got hit. My teacher was freaking out because she knew a couple of people there and was trying to get a hold of them. Still remember it all.
