Paint trim white?

Hi everyone, I lurk here occasionally but have a question of my own. All of the trim in our house (baseboards, door and window trim) is painted a dark brown color. We are starting to get our house in shape to sell next year, and will need to put new floors down, and add new quarter round trim to finish them off. I'm thinking I will need to re-paint all the trim anyway, since I'm sure I won't be able to match the brown paint exactly. Should I try to match the best I can? Or paint all the trim white? I'm almost thinking that all white would look nicer when we are ready to sell too. Thoughts?

Re: Paint trim white?

  • I'm a fan of white trim, personally. Depending on how long ago your trim was painted it will be very hard to match the color. It's a PITA to repaint the trim though. Do you have a real estate agent that you could contact and ask what they think will give you the biggest bang for your buck? Or are they any current homes for sale in your area where you could see what they've done to the interior? I think it would all depend on what other homes in your area are doing and what people in your area are looking for.

  • I like white trim, I think it opens up the rooms. So I would suggest going white instead of trying to match the brown.
  • Ditto white.  Fresh white trim makes everything look clean.
  • Thanks everyone. This is everything I've been thinking. Our realtor came over yesterday and looked around and said that our current floors aren't as bad as she was thinking and we  could go either way with new floors or not. So now DH and I have some deicisons to make about that. But I'm thinking I might do the white trim regardless.
