30th Birthday Party!

Ahhh, I can't believe I'm already turning 30!!!  I have been dreading this for so long, but it was bound to happen.  Sooooo, I'm saying goodbye to my twenties with a bang!!  I'm planning an over-the-top 1920's Great Gatsby themed party! :D

My uncle and aunt have kindly offered their home to hold the event.  They have a very beautiful, very large house with enough space for a bartender, dj, caterer, tables and chairs and I'm even planning on getting some blackjack dealers.  My friends are getting really into it and we're all looking for fabulous flapper dresses and head pieces!  I think I'm about as excited for this party as I was for my wedding! lol  It's going to be held on March 1, so I've still got a good amount of time to plan it.

Has anyone ever had or been to a party with this theme?  Any input or ideas?  Like I said, I'm going all out and want this to be a very memorable occasion!

  • That sounds like so much fun.  You are lucky!!

I haven't been to a theme party like that ever.

  • I've done several themed parties.  They were mostly back in the day when I was 20 so we never got too fancy with it.  People always got really into my themes though.  I think it's because I gave prizes, usually alcohol and we were all underage so getting your hands on booze was a big deal back then!

I haven't been to a themed party in so long it would be one to host one now that I'm a real adult,  lol!

I know a lot of people combine the 1920s with murder mystery themes.  You could do something with that.  I saw an episode of The Girls Nextdoor a long time ago where they did a 1920s theme with a murder mystery scavenger hunt.  It looked like a ton of fun.

  • I have no clue how the murder mystery thing is supposed to work.  Do people from the party play parts or are actors hired?

I think you can either have guests play the parts or hire a company to come in and do it.  I think you can get tips online to do the scavenger hunt.  Not sure, I've never hosted one, but I think it would be a ton of fun.
  • I had a murder mystery party for my 16th birthday. I think my mom bought a kit online. It was a box that contained all of the stuff to have the party (the scripts for everyone to read, etc). It was fun, and I think I ended up being the killer LOL!

  • Actually, look what I found just by doing a quick Google search...

It's a 1920's themed murder mystery party kit:

  • Umm...I just think no matter what we should all go to her birthday party ;)

It sounds like a lot of fun!! I have never really been to theme parties, but I love that murder mystery idea. I'd see if you could get a couple of friends who were willing to do some acting to be the "murdered guest" or what not. Maybe they could even read clues aloud as the ghost? I don't know, haha. I love the Gatsby theme though. Over the top and wonderful!

  • @ystaalenburg I turned 30 in June.  It's not as bad as I expected.  The biggest different is it takes me longer to recover since turning 30, like after a workout or a night of drinking...

Your party sounds so fun!  Keep us posted on the details.  I haven't been to a theme party since college, but they are always so much fun!
  • @sjs1013 It already takes me longer to recover from a night of drinking!  That started happening around 27 :(  But the upside to that is I've gained the knowledge of knowing just the right amount to drink to not feel crappy the entire next day :)

I'm super excited about the party!  All my girlfriends are really getting into it and H even said he's going to wear a suit with a hat and cane :D  So far, I've gotten the DJ hired and designed the invitations.  Working on food now.  I just got the most ridiculous quote - $4800 for food and bar service, not including the actual alcohol!  Oh, and that's only for 40 people including 10 children!
