Putting address numbers on a large rock

So we currently have our address number on our mailbox, but it's across the street from our house (so can be confusing), and on our garage, which is far away from the street (long driveway), so is hard to see.

Anyway, we thought it would be awesome to put our numbers on the rock in our yard. It's right next to the drive way, which would make it easier for people to see it and put couple of those solar powered pathway lights by it so it can bee seen at night. We're not sure how to go about getting the numbers on the rock... you can't really hammer into a rock... anyone know of a not too hard, not too expensive way to do this?

Another place we're thinking is our front door, but then people would have already passed the driveway and have to back up... it also might be hard to see since we have a lot of trees in our yard. Last resort would just to buy one of those stakes and stick it by the drive way, but I never thought those were very nice and they aren't very weather resistant.

Any other ideas appreciated!

Re: Putting address numbers on a large rock

  • Could you paint the numbers on or use some vinyl decals (maybe then coat them with some polyeurothane or something so they don't start peeling). That would be the easiest/cheapest way I would envision getting that look.

I have heard of companies that will carve designs into stone so that may be another option for you to look into. I've never done it myself but the pics I've seen online look really nice!

If you aren't totally commited to the rock idea, you could maybe put the number on the side of a planter or something like that. H's grandma used to have a small decorative river rocks lining the perimeter of her front yard where most of the rocks were black, but then they used white rocks to write out the house number in a little area near the driveway. Not sure if I described that well but it was really cute.

    Good luck!

  • I like this rock idea.

Check out your local DIY store and ask about masonry screws. They can go into brick and mortar. Depending on the type of rock the boulder is, they MAY go into that too. Or, the rock may be too hard for masonry screws.

Another idea I have is to get a 4-5 foot tall post of some kind and to affix the numbers to it like this. Paint to coordinate with your home. Decorate with plants and flowers at the base.

  • I like the rock idea too. That's a great idea. Keep it down by the street so people can't miss it.
  • I keep seeing people on Pinterest carving words into rocks with a Dremmel.

The river rock idea sounds awesome, but wouldn't work out to well in the Winter. Definitely love that idea, maybe if we ever move further south!

I think we'll look into the masonry screws, but husband just suggested gluing metal numbers to the rock. He doesn't want to carve into it (though I thought that would be cool too), I'm not sure what kind of glue would stick to a rock though....
  • Hmm, not sure about what kind of glue would work out. I can ask my H if he suggests anything in particular since he's always doing something around the house. I usually see him with some gorilla glue although you'll probably need to hold the numbers in place for a bit until the glue sets. IDK for certain though.

And for the snow covering the rocks, I hadn't even thought about that. H's grandma used to live in a small town up in the Colorado Rockies but it was really hard to get there in the winter so I don't think there was any actual snow in her yard any time we went to go and visit. I hadn't even considered that, lol.

  • I think the rock idea would be great. It would allow you to be extremely creative with the paint! Also you could try a post-planter. The numbers would go vertically down the post and you could use a colorful plant to draw the attention. Maybe attach lights to the post at night, or a spotlight perhaps.

    Hope this helps!
