dog with dark brown urine and blood

hi. so i have an 11 year old beagle mix who has been on phenobarbital since she was 2ish for seizures. yesterday she peed in the house and it was almost brown with what looked like an actual blood clot. i know long term pheno use can damage their livers.
but i am hoping its just a uti or something. but from what im reading online dark urine is usually associated with the liver.
has this happened to any of your pets? she goes to the vet in a couple hours.
tia.

Re: dog with dark brown urine and blood

  • I don't have any insight on phenobarbital causing liver damage, but I just wanted to say that my pup has had dark urine w/ blood a few times and it always ended up being a UTI - it also caused her to have accidents in the house.  I really hope that is all it is and it's easily treated.  I'm glad you have an appointment with the vet to get her checked out.  Good luck!

that makes me feel better. thanks!!
  • If the kidneys were affected by the phenobarbital, then you could possibly relate the dark/bloody urine to that. Liver damage doesn't show up as discolored urine/blood in urine.

Take her to the vet ASAP. She's probably got a UTI. Those things are painful!
