Gift giving advice

So one of my close friends from when I lived in Kansas has always wanted children. She has two step children that she has raised as her own. Their mom isn't really in the picture. She also had two miscarriages in Sept of 2010 and April of 2011. Due to several factors including her age, fertility issues, smoking, ect, she probably won't ever have one of her own. I really hope I'm wrong. I haven't seen her in almost two years and I know my pregnancy and baby have been hard on her. She bailed on my baby shower and keeps saying she'll come visit but hasn't. I miss my friend. Anyway, October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. I really want to get her something like an Origami Owl living locket but they are fairly expensive. Not that I mind shelling out the cash for such a gift. I still might but due to the move I'm trying to watch funds. It has to be small due to shipping fees. Does anyone have any other ideas? Or is this even a good idea?

Re: Gift giving advice

  • You can give her something in the birthstones of the children she lost. I've seen angel candle holders, maybe a necklace. If you have this type of relationship with her, I say go for it! Add in a little note saying you're thinking of her and miss you in your life.

  • I might keep looking for something. We were super close and referred to each other as sisters. We still do just don't talk or see each other very often any more.

  • I would say a heartfelt card with maybe a small gift. I guess I need to know more about what she likes.  I personally don't care for jewelry so if you got me something, I might not wear it. I would love a small bouquet of flowers with a note, or a card with a box of candy.  My friend knows I love candy corn, so she mailed me a box with 2 packages of candy corn and a card. Can you tell us more about her?
  • Sure!  I know she wears jewelry but I'm not sure if Origami Owl is her style.  I guess if I'm questioning that then I probably shouldn't get it for her.  She's very outspoken, fun to be around, and kind of loud.  She wears her hair long and mostly always wears it down.  I've seen her wear hats a few times but not often.  She's constantly battling with her weight.  I hesitate to send candy or chocolates because I never can tell when she'll start on one of her healthy dieting kicks.

She loves shows like True Blood, Supernatural, and Buffy.  Her stepdaughter just went to college and her husband is away on work.  I'm not sure for how long.  She says they are hoping to move to South Dakota next year.  Or Montana.

I've sent her flowers a few times in the last couple of years. A month or so ago I sent a hand written note in the mail to let her know I'm thinking of her.  Last year I sent her a pot of mums in October.  I bought her a journal a few years back but I have no clue if she ever used it or what.  I know she loved the artwork on the front so I know she kept it but not sure if she actually used it.

  • Did you get a response with the handwritten note last month?
  • Like the angel  candle holder idea if she likes that kind of thing.

  • I did through Facebook. She commented on one of my comments that she got my note and cried.

  • I think a candle holder sounds really nice.
  • I think that is perfect!

  • I think that's really sweet. Are you going to get her two in order to symbolize both of them? Or just one?

  • Not sure. I was thinking two candles but it might depend on how much shipping is.
