I read this before I knew who John Green was or anything about him. I thought it was just alright. I mean, I liked it, but I wasn't wild about it.

Now that I'm a JG fangirl, I think it's pretty great and would recommend it to just about anyone.
*ETA* I want to add that the reason I like it now is because I can hear his voice reading it and hear his heart behind so many of the parts that I just didn't like the first time through. Not because I'm just "omg, everything JG does is amazing!" but because I get where he was coming from... if that makes sense? Sorry, I felt the need to clarify ;)

Has your opinion of a book ever changed because of a new opinion of the author?

(I'm aware that this could work the other way too. You like someone's book, find out they are awful then realize you dislike their book :) )

  • I feel like that about JG books too. Would I love TFIOS as much if it weren't by my favorite author? I think I probably wouldn't because it wouldn't be TFIOS and have that incredible voice and heart that he's so good at.

I sort of liked EL James when she was another chick writing fanfiction. Now I refuse to read anything she has written.

The same goes for Stephenie Meyer. Not only do I think she's not that great of a person, but I'm still bitter about Midnight Sun. So I loved the first 3 Twilight books before I found out what a twat it's author was.

I also am dragging my feet reading Bumped by Megan McCafferty because I've heard that it's really bad and I really love her as a person and an author so I'm scared to read it and hate it.

  • I feel this way about Ender's Game. The book is right up my alley, but I've held off on reading it since I found out what a douche the author is.

  • I totally agree with Ender's Game. Good book I feel bad liking because of a douchey author.

In college John Irving came and did a reading. It made me like his books more because I had a little more insight into his books.
Kristen's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

    This exactly.

I picked up Brad Meltzer's first 3 books after hearing an interview with him on the radio, and thought he was smart and funny in that dorky way that I love, talking about research and comic books.  I met him at a book signing for at a Wegman's, where he acted charmed by my beat-up, re-read paperbacks and I loved him even more.  Andbutalso once I tweeted about his book for one of the book-a-day IG challenges and he messaged me back!
I wouldn't say he's my favorite author, but having met him and knowing more about his work, I think it makes me like his books more.  I couldn't watch his TV show though.  I saw it got okay-to-bad reviews and couldn't bring myself to be disappointed.

    Don't do it. Seriously.

  • I confess that I have never actually finished LFA. I wasn't feeling it when I first picked it up, so Will Grayson Will Grayson was the first time I "heard" and loved JG's voice, and I've enjoyed every book since. I'm going to read LFA very soon to get my JG fix.

On the same sort of note, I started and put down Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and didn't love Lovers Dictionary but I adore Every Day. After I saw David Levithan at the Decatur book festival, he just seems like a genuinely nice, kind of brilliant person and I'm excited to read his books because of that.

I refuse to purchase Ender's Game but I would still like to read it, despite how despicable I find its author.

I think it's true in life in general, that you root for the people who you respect and genuinely like and against who you do not.

  • I'm actually reading Looking for Alaska right now and I hear so much of it in JG's voice as I read, lol.

I think learning about what a jerk SM is definitely had something to do with my feelings for Twilight going down.
