Dominican Republic

Would you bring small children here? My brother in law is thinking of a destination wedding here since his bride's family is from here. The youngest of the kids would be 1 ish, then a 3 and 5 year old. I guess I am most worried about the health care if something were to happen and someone was to get sick while we were there.

Re: Dominican Republic

  • I visited both Punta Cana & Puerto Vallarta in the past and both times at an all inclusive - if it helps these all have an "on site medic" at the hotels - i'm just not sure as far as hospitals / specialty care goes. If you know the resort / area perhaps call ahead and ask these questions - you will feel more comfortable with you decision. Good luck & congrats to your family on their upcoming wedding!

  • I went to Punta Cana a couple of years ago. We did a soana island excursion and I was stung by a bee there and had to have it checked the next day by the nurse at the hotel because it looked like it was getting infected. She wanted to send me into town to the hospital but I refused...LOL Good news is, most resorts have onsite nurse...now I couldn't tell you their qualifications because this particular nurse wasn't very helpful but she did give me some antibiotics and cream for my sting. I am not sure how I would feel if it were my child though. However, there are a lot of americans living there so can't be that bad. I would take my kids if I were to go again.  I would just make sure you travel with a credit card and good travel insurance that can cover costs if you needed it.
  • I went to Punta Cana a few months ago and my friend got a sun blister on her lip and had to go to the doctor at the hotel and he was extremely helpful, There was a lot of kids where we stayed too so I don't think you should have any problems.
