can we talk exercise

I know its totally fine to continue exercising but my husband is freaked out by me continuing with it.  I tried to reason with him and explain that its good for me and baby to be healthy and he's not hearing any of it.

specifically sit-ups bother him even though I told him the baby is like the size of a poppy seed.

did anyone elses husbands have an issue with this.

the doctor has said many times that its great to continue on with it, but Ben doesn't want to believe him.

i'm at a loss and will most likely just ignore him. I told him I wouldn't do anything to put the pregnancy in jeopardy.

Re: can we talk exercise

  • I don't have anything on hand but could you find some articles or a book that shows that light exercise is okay and actually good. You could tell him it lowers your risks of certain complications and will help your body be strong during labor and delivery as well as help you to recover easier. Maybe he needs to hear the specifics.

  • thats a good idea! I'll start by printing some articles off the interwebz
  • I'm early into this, but I normally train for and run half marathons this time of year. So I asked my Dr what I can still do.  He said to just not run any further than I have in the past 3 months. If I'm used to running 20 miles/ week, then continue to do so.

My H was very skeptical last night when I got home and went for a run, and insisted that I needed to bring the dog with just in case. I have a feeling that I will be having him join me for one of my appointments, and bringing up exercise in front of the Dr. Do you think Ben would feel better about it if he heard it straight from the Dr's mouth?

  • @brij2006 Ben isn't really interested in anything the doctor says.  since I got pregnant we had to go back to the RE that we wern't very happy with.   we were planning on switching RE's before moving forward with IVF again. I'm not sure if you remember but the RE didn't send us to the best urologist in the area, which was right across the street, and we were very upset with that.

so he went to the appt. today but didn't really say anything to the RE.

but if I didn't go see my RE then I would have had to wait to see my midwife and that would have been at like 8 weeks...and I didn't want to wait of course. I needed to get my progesterone checked and everything.

  • Well dang, that sucks.  I do remember the issue with your RE.

I would definitely ask again once you switch to the midwife. Maybe he will feel more comfortable with her, and if he hears it from 2 Dr's, then believe it. ;-)

  • I have been working out 3-4 days a week consistently this time. I just don't push myself and if I'm not up to it, I don't force it. I have knocked the intensity down a bit and probably will again in 3rd tri.

The general rule is to keep doing what you've been doing but not start anything new/strenuous.

  • My doctor was super strict with me and he said absolutely no abdominal work. After 8 weeks I was allowed to do whatever. That being said, his instructions were not the norm. Working out during pregnancy will have long term benefits for you and the baby.

  • I had bleeding during 1st tri and took it really easy. Now I've been given the ok to go back to the gym, but not to overdue it or do anything I hadn't been doing pre-pregnancy. I do yoga classes, swimming, walking and light jogging, stationary bike etc.

  • I've tried to get some walking in, but I'm usually so tired by the end of the day that I simply don't want to. It's frustrating, because I can tell I've lost some of my cardio stamina (got winded going up some steps yesterday). :(
I think this is partly just pregnancy related. I feel the same way. :(
