What would you do?

I have a really great, almost 15 year old, Akita/Husky mix. I took her to the Vet for her regular check up about 2 months ago and she was healthy but old. It was really tough for her to get in and out of the car and for the trip back we had to lift her (not easy to do to a 120lb dog who doesn't want to be lifted).
In the past week she has started going to the bathroom in her sleep, she also has a hard time getting up to a stand and falls once in awhile but once she's up, she walks okay. She doesn't appear to be in pain except for sometimes when I'm trying to wipe the potty off of her hips or legs. I feel like it's about time to have her put down but I'm not sure. I don't want to wait until she is in pain but I almost feel like if I do it now, it's for my convenience.
I have called the vet but basically, they told me it was my call and to bring her in for another check up. they also said they could give me pain pills for her but sometimes it makes them more active and then pain is worse later. She never liked going to the vet, can't get in the car easily and it's not like pills or a new diet will make her younger so I don't really want to put her through an unnecessary exam but I also want to do well by her.
Any advice or anyone that's been here?

  • My cousin went through this with her boxer recently.  She read an article about euthanasia.  Dogs live in the moment..they don't think about yesterday and and don't look ahead...it is all about this current moment in time,  that being said, what is your dog's quality of life at this very moment?  It is never easy when it comes to this decision but often the decision is based on our wants and needs- more time with a beloved member of the family..take yourself out of the equation (as hard as that is) and only think of your pup.  Sorry you are going through this :(
  • im so sorry you are going through this.  No one can make the decision for you unfortunately. Do what you feel is best for your pup. I cant believe a dog of that size has made it to 15 years. Sending you lots of thoughts to get through this.

  • If it were me and one of my "babies", I would wait until I felt like there wasn't any other choice.

  • First of all I am so sorry.  It is never easy dealing with a pet that is getting toward the end.
We went through this (obviously differences) with our Weim recently.  We were able to control the peeing in her sleep with meds, but she wasn't as hard to get to the vet.  She stayed with us until she was unable to stand on her own, which followed quickly after having to try a few times to get up.  IMO if you think he is in pain or no longer able to enjoy life, it might be time.  Otherwise I hung on to my girl as long as possible.

  • I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. As others have said this is a decision only you can make, it's a very personal thing and only you can really know what's best for your pup. I guess if it were me in that situation, I would give the medication a try. I would want to feel like I exhausted every reasonable effort.

  • I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. We lost our dog of 14 years this past May so I understand how hard this is.

One thing we were told was, when they can no longer do the things they love anymore, it is probably time to put them down. My dog died before we did that but he could no longer go on walks, chase a tennis ball, and terrorize our cat anymore. His quality of life was basically nothing.

Again, so sorry you are dealing with this. Good thoughts your way.
