Please help. persistant symptoms of heart issues at 28.

Hello. I am 28 and have been dealing with weird 'spells' and these symptoms for almost a year. Recently I was on my way to a wedding when I got a odd sensation of a spasms in my left upper chest area-followed by pain and numbness radiating from my back down my left arm and hand. I have an app on my phone to take my heart rate and it was 148/min. My husband made me calm down and breath right and it passed, but I always feel shaken for a while afterwards...having a hard time thinking about anything else. Another odd symptom Ive been having are random twitching and spasms throughout my body (lip, eyelid, legs, arms). When I first started having these symptoms I went to a Cardiologist who did EKGS-A stress test (treadmill) with no dyes, and an echocardiogram. All which came back normal. My question is, has anyone else experienced this? Did my doctor miss something? Can heart issues be missed even though I had all the tests done? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Re: Please help. persistant symptoms of heart issues at 28.

  • Also-I have absolutely no family history of heart disease.
  • I don't have any of these symptoms, but I do know that heart issues can be very difficult do diagnose- especially if a condition is rare. It doesn't sound like the tests your doctor did were exhaustive, so I don't think there's any harm in getting a second opinion.

Another thing it could be is stress. If you have a lot of tension in your neck or back, it can cause numbness in your arm as well as heart attack-like symptoms in the case of a panic attack. Were you upset or anxious when you were walking to this wedding? Because that can definitely increase your heart rate. Stress can also cause twitching.

If I were you, I would still get a second opinion. It IS possible for heart conditions to be left undiagnosed, and it's better to be safe than sorry. You might also want to see your primary care doctor in addition to a cardiologist for a full physical to make sure it isn't due to some other condition. Good luck!
  • Wow. I could have written this. I also have been having chest pains and twitching. I'm 28. I've had a chest x-ray, EKG, blood tests. Everything was normal. I recently started Prozac, and I guess we'll see how that goes.
    Married 2011.
    Baby Boy 2015.
  • I have had the little spasms you describe - eyelids, legs, whatever. It's happened periodically for my whole life. I have no history of heart issues. (I'm 29.)

  • This sounds like panic attacks or anxiety to me. DH suffers from similar symptoms and a mild antidepressant helped
  • ^^ this. I had ALL of your symptoms and was told by more than one physician that they are symptoms of anxiety. I was experiencing episodes of my heart racing and not being able to catch my breath and finally went to urgent care after feeling as though I was going to pass out. I also had been eperiencing my hands and arm going numb and thought it was unrelated, as it had been going on much longer than the heart and breathing issues. The urgent care physician said it was most likely anxiety and my PCP said the same as well. It would be worth talking to your PCP about possible anxiety and treatment.
  • Are any of these "spells" accompanied by a headache?
