Since it's Wednesday, I'm going to do this in clicky poll fashion. But when did you tell your parents?
H and I are not agreeing on when to tell them. He wants to tell them this weekend, after we get my next set of Beta results back. I want to tell them around the end of the month or beginning of November (8-9weeks along).

So when did you tell your parents?

Re: CPW: When did you tell your parents?

  • We were going to wait until 8-ish weeks.  We decided to tell them when I was 7 weeks...but the day before we told them, my due date changed and it ended up being 8 weeks anyway!  We'd had two beta draws and two u/s by that point since we were seeing an RE.

  • @sparklingdiamond That's how I feel. I'm a horrible secret keeper. Especially from my mom! She's pretty much my best friend. It's also being difficult because she wants to run a half marathon together at the end of November, and I know there's no way I'm going to have enough energy to. So I don't know how to tell her no without breaking the news.

  • We where living with my mom when I got pregnant so the morning that I got my BFP I ran into her room yelling, "I'm pregnant!!!!". Then we told my dad, MIL & FIL the next day. And that's only because DH was at work when I found out so I wanted to tell him before more people found out.

My mom knew before DH :-/ lol
  • Plus, we had tried for so long that I wouldn't want to keep it from them.  I knew there would be there for me if anything bad happened.

  • First time around we told my parents around 5 weeks because I was having some bleeding and needed their support, but We didn't tell our brothers until 12 weeks.

Second time we waited to tell them until after the 8 week dating U/S since there were no issues.

  • We had planned to wait until after the first midwife appointment, especially with all the spotting and crap I had early on. However, I was so sick that my parents weren't convince it was nothing. So, we told them around 8 weeks. Robs family and my extended family we told after the 1st appointment and dating ultrasound around 11-12 weeks. We had heard a HB and seen baby by then.
Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

  • We told my parents at 7 weeks exactly, the day after my first ultrasound.  I would have told them immediately after my 1st beta, but I wanted to tell them in person and it fell on Mother's Day so it was perfect.  I could not keep it any longer especially since my mom knew I was having issues and I am sure she was worried/upset.

However, one week prior to that we told my SIL and BIL because we went out to dinner and I wasn't drinking.  Earlier that day, I called my sister because I didn't feel right telling SIL without telling her.

However, no one was given the go-ahead to tell anyone else until around the end of the 1st trimester.

  • First, I wanted to wait 12 weeks. H refused.
Next, wanted to wait till after SIL baby shower on 10/6. Again, H refused.
After that, wanted to wait till after first doctors appointment on 9/27. And yet again, H refused.
I was able to get him to wait till my parents weekend off a week before my first appointment. Trust me, I didn't hear the end of it till we finally told them.

First time, we told them right away. I ended up miscarrying, and it was really rough to un-tell them. I got pregnant two more times which also ended in a m/c and we didn't tell them until after the fact. With Will, we waited until around 10 weeks just because we both felt a lot more comfortable about how things were progressing.
With all my pregnancies, I told my sister and a few close friends right away, and they really helped me stay somewhat sane.

We didn't tell DH's parents until like 7 weeks. After my first appt and initial blood work. We only told them that early because DH wwanted to tell the whole world because he was so excited.

  • With Cora, we had to tell my parents at 5 weeks because they push drinking often. We told DH's parents at 10 weeks.

This time, I want to hold off on telling both sets of parents for as long as possible, but I'm thinking we are going to have to tell them both this weekend. My parents are pushing taking us out this weekend for our town's festival, and there will be drinks. Mom was already asking why I wasn't drinking this past weekend. Geez.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!
  • We told our IL's after the second beta because we needed to get my husband out of work for the ultrasound the following day. He works for the family business. They also know what we've been going through so their support is wonderful .

We haven't told my mom or her husband yet because my mom can't be trusted to keep a secret. I love her but she knows nothing about our IF and never will. I'd like to hold out on telling her as long as possible. So sometime after thanksgiving probably. She lives out of state and I won't see her for either holiday this year.
  • I was 8 weeks when we told our parents.

We told MY parents after we saw the heartbeat, so I think that was u/s #3?  It was after our 6 week appointment.  I wanted my parents to know because if I had another m/c, I wanted them to be aware.  Plus, it was Mother's Day and we got to do something cutesy.  We waited until after 1st tri to tell the ILs.

ETA:  Pregnancy #1, we didn't tell anyone about until after my m/c.

  • With both pregnancies, my parents found out right away because they knew we were doing treatments. My inlaws found out after the heartbeat with pregnancy 1 (bc it happened to be Mother's Day so we told my mil then) and only found out about pregnancy 2 because my SIL was visiting us when the m/c happened.

Next time, close friends, parents and siblings will find out at 12 weeks. Extended family will find out at 20, as well as friends and work.

  • Since we did IVF, everyone knew when our betas would be... we wanted to have a little bit of control over when we told them, so we actually told them even before our betas. I tested positive Friday afternoon, told the in laws on Saturday, and then my mom on Sunday (which happened to be Mother's Day). They were all surprised because I had been adamant that I wouldn't test before betas.

  • We were 7 weeks when we told my mom and DH's parents. I knew we would tell them if something were to go wrong anyway so we wanted their support and to share our joy with them. They respected us and didn't share until after we announced (12 weeks).

We weren't planning on telling siblings until after the first u/s at 8 weeks but BIL and SIL showed up unexpectedly to the lunch we planned for just MIL. We ended up telling them that day too and DH called his other sister so she could know the same day.

Work and friends (aside from 3 of my closest girlfriends) didn't know until after 12 weeks.

We told everyone at a little over 8 weeks, but by then I already had 2 betas and an ultrasound (because I was cramping and spotting).

  • We wound up telling my parents the day we had our BFP because they were going to book a family vacation to Mexico for the week after my due date and we obviously weren't going to be able to go. I wanted to wait and tell them until after my first appointment and ultrasound. We wound up telling DH's family on Christmas after our first appointment, but hadn't had the ultrasound yet.
