SBR: Commercials

Has anyone else noticed an influx of television commercials for books? Maybe I never noticed before or maybe it's the certain channels I'm watching, but I am seeing more and more of them. And I don't understand the newest James Patterson commercial. Since 2006, one out of every 17 books sold is a James Patterson books and he thinks he needs to dress up like a pirate and push his new children's book?

I guess I don't see the point. The commercials I've seen have been much less compelling than most book trailers found on YouTube. Maybe spending most of their budget on placement and not content? I think if you're not into that author or genre, a commercial is not going to make you buy it. And if you are into that author or genre, odds are you already know about the book release.

Just wondering, have you ever been compelled to buy a book from a TV commercial?
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

Re: SBR: Commercials

  • I haven't personally, but I know my Mum (who isn't much of a reader other than on vacation) mentioned wanting to pick up a book that she had seen a commercial for. It was definitely something she never would have picked-up (or even known about) without having seen the TV spot.

  • I've seen them but I've never wanted to buy a book because of a commercial, but I've only really seen James Patterson ones. I doubt it would work because once the commercial ends most people forget about whatever it was they wanted to buy anyway.

This.  He strikes me as a mass produced machine/money whore anyhow.

Exactly. He puts out a half-dozen (I can't even decide if that's exaggerating lol) books a year. There's no need to advertise a new book is coming out. There's always a new book coming out!

  • He always has ads/posters up inside Metro cars.  You'd think that this would be prime book-advertisment space because more than half of the people on the train are reading something, but he and David Baldacci are the only ads I ever see.

  • Every once in awhile I'll see an ad for a Nora Roberts book but mostly it's James Patterson stuffing his book down our throats.
