Update!

So, DH went and had his semen analysis done last week.  My doctor called me today with the results.  Not great, but not horrible I suppose.  It could have been worse I guess!

Total Count - she told me that she likes to see it above 39 million.  His was way above that.  Woot!

Motility - she told me she likes to see 40% motility.  His was way above that at 73%.  Woot!

However - morphology.  She said you only need a 4% morphology.  His is only 1%.  Bummer!

So...basically he needs to quit smoking.  Which I knew that all long (or at least I figured that all along).  I told him what she said.  So hopefully he'll quit smoking - if he doesn't, we have other issues on our hand (I guess).

But next steps - He'll need to do another semen analysis about a month after he  quits smoking.  Also, once I get on his insurance (no later than January 2014), we'll do the testing for me to make sure everything is okay for me.

If he has another abnormal Semen Analysis...she'll refer us to a fertility specialist, and most likely we'd need to do an IUI or even IVF.

So, I hope and hope that he takes this serious and quits smoking!  Wish us luck!  I think I may need the good vibes!

Re: Update!

  • Wow that's crazy that he can see the effects in just one month of quitting. Good luck to him!
  • I've been wondering about you the past couple days, if you've gotten things started.  So how is he doing with that information?

I'm not sure if this is going to help or make things worse..  but our main issue is we have 4% motility.  Our morph is 2%, so also low.  However, the urologist & the RE said that was no big deal.  Which I was surprised with.  We were definitely able to do an IUI, so hopefully if you will need treatment, you'll be able to start down that route, especially if his count & motility is good - which is most important!

However, we saw no improvement from we DH quit chewing.  And, I'm surprised she said to only wait one month from after he quits?  I've always heard it's 3 months.. I think sperm takes 72 days or something to mature?  Maybe just ask that when you schedule, if one month is enough.

How about your testing.. have you had anything yet?

    Good luck!!!

  • I was waiting for your reply Ky :-)

He took the information yesterday okay.  He didn't say too much.  I was also thinking it took close to 3 months for sperm to replenish.

I have not had any testing done yet.  As soon as I'm able to get onto his insurance, we'll begin that.  I'll be on his insurance no later than January.  But he thinks he has another open enrollment coming up soon.

  • Good luck both of you! I'm rooting for you! Please keep updating us about everything, as I fully enjoy reading it, knowing I'll be trying in a few months myself.
Athlete, if his insurance is like most places, open enrollment is early-to-mid November and coverage begins January 1.

I actually just missed his open enrollment.  His open enrollment was in August and begins October 1.  My open enrollment isn't until April and begins June 1st.

I'm on my parents insurance as well.  But since I turn 26 in January, I'll get kicked off their insurance...so I'll be able to get onto his insurance due to loss of coverage.

  • Oh I get it. Wow I thought it was all kind of universal. Good to know for future reference!
