Progesterone b/w results

So my progesterone blood work results are in. I'm not sure if they are good, bad, or indifferent. There is information on my results page online that gives reference ranges:

Follicular phase: Less than or equal to 2.7 ng/mL
Luteal phase: 3.0-31.4 ng/mL
Post-menopausal phase: Less than or equal to .2 ng/mL

My level says it was less than .1 ng/mL. So it looks normal because it is less than 2.7 and I had it taken before I ovulated while in the follicular phase. But it's also less than the level for post-menopausal women so I don't know if that's concerning or not. I'm sure my doctor's office will call or let me know at the next appointment if there is something really wrong with any of my results that I've gotten so far (my TSH and prolactin looked to be in the normal range).

I don't know if anyone out there would have any input or not but thought it might be worth a shot to post. Thanks!

Re: Progesterone b/w results

  • Doing some more research now...basically what I see is that the pre-ovulation levels are the same as post-menopausal levels. So maybe my low result just shows exactly what the test was supposed to show, that I'm not ovulating at a regular time/CD 14.

  • I believe you are correct; that level just shows that you had not ovulated (yet) at the time of your blood draw. Do you have a follow-up appointment scheduled?

  • @spin25, I have to wait for CD 1 to call to schedule the follow-up and to schedule my HSG. I am on CD 30 and I still don't think I have O'ed yet....although I've had lots of EWCM the past few days.

I just thought maybe your doctor would give you Provera already since you haven't O'ed...unless you usually do O, just late.

  • I never know when I am going to O. It can be anywhere from CD 16 to CD 110...although most of the time it hasn't gone past CD 45. I had my super long 123 day cycle this time last year. If it gets to CD 60 I'm definitely going to call and see if they can give Provera this time rather than waiting for me to O. Last year they just told me I needed to lose weight and sent me on my way. I am now seeing a new doctor so hopefully he will be more proactive!

  • I'd say you can pretty much ignore the "post-menopausal" values, since you're obviously not that. I would expect that only a woman who has gone through menopause would need to reference that as a normal range.

You're probably right, Lucky. I was freaking out at first but when I did some more research and thought about the results a little more, I realized they are probably normal.
