Sofa choices...

Hi, I'm torn between 2 sofa choices and have been looking at it for too long and can't decide so I thought I'd look for some outside help. I'm decorating my living room (the more formal one) and I already have 2 traditional wing back chairs and a square coffee table (see attached pics). I need a sofa to go on the other end and am stuck between two options.

The first is a low back tufted sofa (pic attached) which at 78" gives me more seating, however, it also means that the coffee table will be a tad short for those sitting in the arm chairs. Nothing that can't be dealt with a by adding a few side tables, though. It also has more modern tapered legs compared to all the traditional turned legs I already have but I kind of like that it doesn't all match. My concern with this sofa is that it may be too large and that with a low back and more modern arms, it will not "go" with the armchairs.

The second sofa option (pic is attached) is a high back more traditional tufted loveseat. At 66" wide, it is a little cozier then I would have liked. The style matches the armchairs much better and I would order it in an ivory and tie it all together with throw pillows. My concerns with this sofa are that it does not have a fitted seat meaning there is a crack in the middle (2 cushions instead of one long one) which I wanted to avoid and that it may be too similar to the chairs and end up making the room look too stuffy.

I was aiming for a mix of traditional and modern with classic shapes with updated fabrics and accents. The legs of both sofa options can be ordered in any wood tone and fabric can be ordered in any color or texture so color is not a problem.

I'd love to hear any opinions! Thanks!

Re: Sofa choices...

  • I would go with the tan-colored low back tufted sofa. I think the other sofa is too similar to the chair, whereas the tan sofa adds a nice pop of contrast! I see what you mean about the legs not matching, but it is a minor detail that most people won't notice, especially if you ordered the legs in a similar color. I think the tan sofa will lighten the room and add a contemporary, modern feel. I love the contrast in styles, but that's just me! :)

I accidentally posted my comment twice, not sure how to delete this second one! :P
  • Personally, I love the lines of the love seat and would like one in my living room, haha. But I think with the look that you are going for and the chairs that you already have, I would go with the low-back sofa. Like you pointed out, I really love that it only has a single cushion and I think it would compliment the chairs that you have very nicely. Add in a couple of nice side tables (always a great opportunity to accessorize!) and I think it would all look really nice.
?Laugh whenever you can. Keeps you from killing yourself when things are bad. That and vodka.?
  • I like the lighter sofa.  The grey one is awesome, but too similar in color to everything else. The lighter one will add brightness and the legs, you can't really notice, unless you point them out.  :)  Looks good

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think I was unknowingly secretly rooting for the low back beige one all along but I just needed an outside perspective to agree. Ordered it today!
