Inexpensive professional attire?

I am in the process of getting hired at the local paper as a part time customer service representative. When I went for the interview, I noticed that the other girls there were more professionally dressed (nicer tops, dress slacks, etc.)

Problem being--the only dressier things I have are my interview clothes and a dress I wore to my friend's wedding which might be a bit risqué for a professional setting. My full time job wardrobe basically consists of jeans and tshirts since I work in a laboratory.

Can anyone recommend anywhere to look for inexpensive dressier clothes? I did not want to go overboard on a wardrobe since it is only a one day a week gig.

Re: Inexpensive professional attire?

  • I have found some good deals at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory type stores!  Since you only need one outfit per week and already have a couple items, it should be easy enough to start building up your wardrobe as your budget allows.

    Happy Shopping!
  • I completely forget about Burlington. I know we have one about a half hour away from here and they usually have had some good stuff. Thanks!!

  • I get a majority of my stuff from New York & Company.  Reasonable prices if you can hit a sale and the quality is pretty decent.
  • I've bought some blazers and cardigans at Target. I also get quite a bit of work clothes at Savers.

  • I found some tops at Target and Old Navy in the past for a low price.  Cardigans, blouses etc.  Happy shopping.
  • I adore The Limited, Banana Republic, Express, Gap, etc.

Save your coupons. Sign up for their emails and they will send you coupons in the mail and send you mailers in you email for when sales are going on. You get great quality clothing at 1/2 off sometimes.

Old Navy has great building basics as does Target. Cardigans, T-Shirts, Camisoles, etc. I peek in New York and Co when I am at the mall but rarely do I buy anything because it is so cheesy to me and not very well made. Its the same stuff just different colors. But they are a great store for those that are just starting out in their jobs. I would definitely point you here since you are just starting out. They have great basics, nice conversation pieces, nice suiting options, etc. GET THEIR COUPONS TOO!

Stay away from White House Black Market. Although it is my favorite store I can't recommend it to someone who doesn't want to break the bank. My friend has had a lot of luck at The Loft.
