Should we paint our gutters?

Hi guys,

so we finally got our new roof and seamless gutters installed (yay!) and the painters are going to be here to paint the exterior of the house and trim this week. We are torn between 2 colors for the exterior of the house (Sherwin Williams Yearling and Sherwin Williams Meadowlark) and are trying to find a trim color that would look nice. We're leaning towards the Yearling color for the main body of the house, but I think that would need a warm white trim color, while our new gutters are more of a bright white. If we went with the Meadowlark color we would probably need a "cooler" white, which might match the new gutters a little better.

DH doesn't want to paint the gutters since they are brand new, but it leaves me wondering if we went with the warmer color if it would look weird for the gutters to be left bright white and not painted the same color as the trim.

Here is a pic of the front of our house with the new roof and gutters. You can see the paint colors we are thinking about on the right garage door. Also a close up of our front door so you can see the gutters a little better.

Thanks for your advice!

Re: Should we paint our gutters?

  • I really like the bright white on the gutters, and I think you should keep the trim white too. I have never seen painted gutters last long. The paint chips off and peels off, and it's a lot more upkeep, especially if you are cleaning out your gutters multiple times a year and potentially scratching them with ladders and tools.  Plus, the painters will not be able to provide you with the same finished and smooth look that the gutters currently have. There may end up being globs and visible paint brush strokes that won't make them look as new.  Also, consider that if you paint the gutters a different shade of white, painting the downspouts will then be necessary because the colors will clash.

I think the bright white will help bring some life to the house and make it look a little more updated versus a little older with a darker white.
  • I'm a little late on this, but I wouldn't paint your gutters, it would likely peel. We just had new gutters installed as well and will stick with our current trim scheme when we paint.
  • BTW, your house is ADORABLE!
