Another Abby question...

Hey all!  So sorry I post so many Abby questions, she is the first pup Ive had so I really don't know!

Should you wake a sleeping dog to take them out for potty?  My husband wakes up at 5:00 and is out the door before 6:00...so between that time Abby does her business and eats and (sometimes) gets a short walk.  When I come downstairs at 6:30-6:45...she is back to snoring and sleeping and stays that way until I have to leave at 7:30.  My husband always says "did you take her out again?"  And I say no b/c she is snoring and fast asleep...I come home at lunch around noon to let her out so I figured, she just went an hour prior and Ill be back in 4.

If you were me, would you wake up a sleeping dog to take them for a walk?  My vote is no..if she's snoring, let her be!  She gets the majority of her exercise (walks and playdates with neighbor's boxer) at night so her mornings are usually pretty lazy.

Re: Another Abby question...

  • If she has no interest in waking up to go out when you're getting ready to leave, and this arrangement has been working for you so far, then no, there's no reason to change it and force her to get up.

  • totally agree with Lucky on this. My dog is like this at night. the last time he goes out is about 830ish. As a pup he would go out later in the night before we went to bed, now hes alittle older and he has no desire to go back out and holds anything until i get up at 630.

  • Thanks for the feedback...he (my husband) gets all worked up thinking I need to take her out...I tell him, she's 2!  She went potty 1 or 2 times when you let her out and Im home at lunch..so really, she's holding it for 4 hours max.  She also snores like a champ and puts the blanket over her eyes and clearly doesn't want to be disturbed.  Her crate and bed are in the livingroom right next to the kitchen, she hears me making coffee/breakfast, walking around and doesn't get up.  Haha.  my kinda of girl b/c im not a morning person either!  Thanks ladies
  • I agree. If she's not bothered to get up and isn't having accidents, I don't see the problem.

  • My 2 year old EM will sleep for 14 hours straight if I let her.  She'll put her self to bed at 7:30/8:30 after she eats and goes out.  Will sleep through until whenever in the morning.  If DH is going to work - she normally goes out around 6:30 and goes promptly back to sleep.  I do get up and put her breakfast out around 7:30/8.  Sometimes she gets up and eats it.  If she eats, she wants to go out after.  If it is a weekend - she doesn't move until there is food out in the kitchen.

When she was younger - we'd be out a few times overnight. But she would ask when she needed to go.  Even now if she NEEDs to go, you know.
