Panther Football Games

Does anyone know if the North Shore gets crazy busy for Pitt football games? We are doing our family pictures at the Point on Saturday afternoon, 4ish. There really isn't much downtown parking close to the point, so I was thinking of parking on the north shore by the pedestrian crossing along the Ft.Duquesne bridge. But there is a Pitt game at 7pm. Good idea or bad idea? Thanks!

Re: Panther Football Games

  • This game is probably going to be the weakest attendance wise since it is Old Dominion.  But, what do I know.  I am unsure of where you are thinking of parking, but I would make sure that it isn't pre-sold only.
  • I'm not sure about crowds, but the lots might be more expensive (if that's where you mean that you're parking?)  When we went to see the duck, we parked in that lot across from the Byham, then walked along Ft. Duquesne Blvd; it wasn't sure close, but it wasn't a bad hike either.

  • Could you park in one of the Gateway Center lots?  Is street parking free on Sundays downtown, too.  (I know it is here on Craig St)?  You could maybe find a spot at a meter on the street close to Gateway Center.
  • I would park in the city, it will cost less. The North Shore lots are sure to be higher event rate parking.  I would either park near the cultural district, PPG (garage between 3rd and 4th aves) or that redish one on Biggelow past the art school.
  • I agree that I would park in town to avoid the event rate parking. We were on the North Shore last weekend and there wasn't a whole lot of parking available since all the lots were closed and there was nothing going on.

  • I think your bigger issue is going to be crowds!  We saw the duck on Sunday and parked at PPG.  I'd try there or the lot under Gateway Center.  The tailgaters will be parking on the north shore.

  • Good luck getting pix at the point if the duck is still there. Our pix were 10/6 and the Point was ridiculously crowded so we skipped the point for pix

  • I have to agree with the comment on the crowds. I was surprised at how busy the city was when we went down with Eleni on the 12th.  Though the 6th was the Great Race (15000 participants) - and the first weekend the duck was here so it was really extra insane.
  • Good point about the parking on the north shore costing more, I hadn't considered that. I was mostly worried about how far we'd have to walk because of my parents. But they might not be able to come this weekend after all, so the issue might be moot. :-/

We plan to do most of the pictures in the park areas and along the steps away from the duck. Last year's pictures were in a very active park - wedding parties doing pictures and lots of other people, and we managed okay.

If it's really bad at the point, we can walk over to the north shore walkway or up along the trail to the convention center. There are so many attractive areas down there, I'm sure we'll find something.

    Thanks!
