Cat behavioral issue

Lately our cat out of the blue started growling, hissing, attacking and occasionally peeing. Our daughter is now afraid of her.
We have taken her to the vet and ran tests and all were normal. We have tried pheramones spray, plug ins and serenity calming collar with no results. I don't know what else to do. I'm afraid she will attack our daughter.

Re: Cat behavioral issue

  • To clarify she only attacks me or my husband.
  • How long did you give the sprays/plug-ins to work? Feliway plug-ins take up to a month to fully saturate the area with pheromones and be fully effective. They then need to be replaced every month. And they only cover a certain sq/ft area, so you may need several throughout your home. The Feliway spray can help faster, but needs to be applied consistently every couple of days to anywhere the cat hangs out. (If you did all that and gave it the proper time to work, feel free to ignore that first paragraph.)

Does your cat have anywhere she can go to get away from you/YH/your daughter? Having her own designated kitty space can help her feel less stressed out or like she has no option but to get defensive/attack. A tall kitty tower so she can escape up high or even a room that isn't used very often made up to be a cozy cat haven can make a big difference.

Did anything in your house change recently? Has your daughter just become more mobile? Toddlers can easily freak out pets with their jerky, uncoordinated movements and loud noises. It's entirely possible your kitty is stressed by something that changed recently.

If you gave adequate time for the Feliway products to work and you haven't seen a change in her behavior, it may be time to try a Rx from the vet. Anxiety meds can work wonders on stressed out pets once you've found the right kind and proper dose for her. Don't give up.
