Common Core?

I have seen a few articles around about the new national learning standards called Common Core. Anybody have thoughts on that?

Re: Common Core?

  • Only that the teachers I am friendly with mostly hate it. Also my child's kindergarten teacher who seems to lean sort of left based on some things she has glowed about in random conversations. She said it was not quite as bad in the 1st grade when she taught it last year but that the math is absolutely impossible with kindergarteners because they just can't developmentally go through the process it takes to get to basic concepts it requires down. Since it is a charter school she has some freedom to stray from the regular common core curriculum and has been teaching them old school basics.

Obviously this is all anecdotal but I certainly give some weight to the idea that the people who do this every single day have a broader understanding of it than I might.

I don't know much about this topic honestly.   It's been about 8 years since student teaching.  All I remember then is having to teach to the "state standards".  My entire teaching portfolio is based on those goals.
